Fans of Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War might have noticed some leftover assets that refer to the possible original title of the game. The game is the latest in the Black Ops series, and recently introduced old favorites like Nuketown into the game. Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is a standard addition to the COD series. It introduces many of the old guns and maps that people know and love, just with enhanced graphics. Even old guns like MP5 still manage to be broken on release, with many players requesting it to be nerfed. Besides the improved graphics, there's not really much that makes the game stand out from the previous Black Ops games.
The previous games were all referred to its release order - Black Ops 2, Black Ops 3, and Black Ops 4. So players are uncertain why Treyarch would push to change a simple "5" in the name to Cold War. A possibility is the game's unsteady development. About a year ago, it was stated that the 2020 Call of Duty game would be Call of Duty: Black Ops 5. However, it was mentioned that the project would be extremely rushed, planned to release only 2 years after Call of Duty: Black Ops 4. With less time to refine the game, this may lead to why many players are finding signs of the game's original name everywhere.
Charlie Intel posted an article reviewing the signs of the original title in the game. It is likely the game was originally supposed to release as Call of Duty: Black Ops 5, but somewhere in development the team decided to change the name. This is seen in subtle hints like the logos inside the game just being "BO5", rather than Cold War. A recent tweet from CoDGhosts619 also mentions how the logo on the message of the day says "Black Ops V" as well. Players suspect there might be a deeper meaning to these logos.
However, Charlie Intel clearly states that this likely doesn't mean anything. There is the possibility that the game was originally called "Black Ops 5" but there isn't really any way of knowing from the game itself. This might also be a choice of design since referring to the game as a "Black Ops 5" rather than "Black Ops Cold War" is a lot easier to place on a logo. For example, the logo in CoDGhosts619's tweet is a lot easier to read with a singular V for the 5, rather than small text that reads "Cold War".
Though, the article does report that a recent update actually removed this logo from the game, which means it's possible the logo was something Treyarch didn't want people to see. In the end, there are probably cooler secrets for fans to discover besides an unused title of the game, like playable classic arcade games.
Call Of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PS4, Xbox One, and PC.
