Doctor Who: Captain Jack Confirmed To Meet Whittaker In Holiday Special

The Doctor Who character Captain Jack Harkness played by John Barrowman will indeed meet Jodie Whittaker’s Doctor during the upcoming holiday special, sources report. Whittaker, the first female actress to take on the role of The Doctor in the series’ long run, has been praised for her take on the character, and the recently concluded Season 12 of the show has been heralded as “a big improvement.”

Following Doctor Who Season 12, the BBC announced they would also be releasing a special holiday episode of the series. The Doctor Who holiday specials are well known for their habit of bringing back old or retired characters and focusing on fan favorites throughout. The 2020 Doctor Who holiday special will be no different since BBC America revealed a few weeks ago that they would be bringing back the popular character Jack Harkness for the special event.

According to EW, Captain Jack Harkness will be one of the returning characters during this year’s Doctor Who holiday special, titled “Revolution of the Daleks.” Barrowman has confirmed that his character will interact with Whittaker as the Thirteenth Doctor, affectionately referred to by fans as “Thirteen.” However, Barrowman is also keeping the exact nature of the characters’ interaction a secret to not spoil the special episode.

“Jack will meet Thirteen. I can’t tell you how, but he will. He will also be on the TARDIS, Thirteen’s TARDIS. Can’t tell you how he gets there, but he will be there. It’s going to be epic.”

In this episode, Captain Jack’s appearance is a big deal for Barrowman, who has not appeared on Doctor Who for almost a decade. The actor has reprised the role on the Doctor Who spinoff series Torchwood but has not reappeared in the main series until now. Barrowman has also had other roles in popular TV franchises like DC’s Arrowverse, but no one of his roles have been quite as iconic as Captain Jack. In his interview, Barrowman expressed his excitement about returning to the character and seemed to hint that he might end up in more than just the holiday special. “I want the reaction to be good because there's a possibility that they could bring him back,” Barrowman teases.

If this statement is to be believed, it would seem that the BBC is using the Doctor Who holiday special this year to test the possibility of bringing Jack Harkness back more permanently. As Barrowman explains, it all depends on whether the fan reaction to Captain Jack is positive. But given the considerable impact Captain Jack’s reappearance has made on the fan community so far, it wouldn’t be surprising for the BBC to bring Barrowman back to Doctor Who full-time eventually.
