Despite the bugs and issues present at launch, Cyberpunk 2077 is still a gorgeous RPG, and the futuristic Night City looks great with the latest Ray Tracing technology. The tradeoff, of course, is that the game can be difficult to run on older or lower-end machines, and the graphics will inevitably take a toll on framerate. To mitigate this somewhat, players have free reign to fiddle with the game's over 20 visual settings to ensure peak performance while maintaining the highest possible visual fidelity. CD Projekt Red very obviously had PC players in mind when they designed Cyberpunk 2077. Still. the game's recommended PC specifications are deceptively low, and machines that meet these recommendations may still fail to run Cyberpunk 2077 over 30 FPS, which for many is simply not good enough. This can quickly become frustrating for players just looking to immerse themselves in CD Projekt Red's new futuristic world.
To mitigate these issues and get the most out of their game, PC players can change and optimize their settings specifically for Cyberpunk 2077. The game itself also includes a few default visual settings that may make it difficult for some players to see the finer details of the environment, and these can be turned off to improve both performance and the visual experience. Here are the settings PC players should change to improve performance without sacrificing gameplay or visuals in Cyberpunk 2077.
Before messing with any of the settings, players should be sure of two things. First, they will want to make sure their computer meets or exceeds the minimum or recommended PC requirements for running the game on Low or High preset settings. These are:
Minimum requirements (1080p Low Settings)
- CPU: Intel Core i5-3750K / AMD FX 8310
- RAM: 8 GB
- GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 780 / AMD Radeon RX 470
- VRAM: 3 GB
- Storage: 70 GB HDD
- OS: Windows 7 (64-bit)
Recommended requirements (1080p High Settings)
- CPU: Intel Core i7-4790 / AMD Ryzen 3 3200G
- RAM: 12 GB
- GPU: Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 (6GB) / AMD Radeon RX 590
- VRAM: 6 GB
- Storage: 70 GB SSD
- OS: Windows 10 64-bit
Players should be sure they also have updated their GPU to the latest drivers, especially if they are using a newer Nvidia card.
Players with especially powerful rigs could try to run the game in 4K or 8K on Ultra preset settings, but there is a chance that might lead to further performance issues, including crashes and low framerate. Most players can and should usually get by on Medium or High settings.
There are a few settings that can be manually adjusted to improve performance in certain areas. To do this, players should enter the Settings menu and select Graphics. Changing the following options will have the greatest impact on FPS and performance:
- Volumetric Cloud Quality: Low or Medium
- Volumetric Fog Resolution: Low or Medium
- Screen Space Reflections Quality: Low or Disabled
- Subsurface Scattering Quality: Low
- Local Shadow and Cascade Shadow Quality: Low or Medium
- Distant Shadows Resolution: Low or Medium
- Contact Shadows: Off
- Ambient Occlusion: Medium to maintain visuals, Low to increase FPS
- Resolution Scaling: DLSS Performance or Auto, or FidelityFX CAS
- Film Grain: Off
- Chromatic Aberration: Off
- Motion Blur: Off
- Max Dynamic Decals: Medium
- Field of View: 75 or 70 degrees
- Level of Detail (LOD): Low for all but players on the newest cards
Players may also want to consider changing their Sound Settings on their computer to optimize audio output. A bug has led to some audio hissing and crackling on all platforms. Players can lower their audio settings to eliminate this crackling.
Right now, most of the major issues with Cyberpunk 2077 are due to the game itself and not the player's machine. As CD Projekt Red releases patches, it is likely players can raise some of these settings again to experience the game as was intended.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PC, PlayStation 4, Google Stadia, and Xbox One, with versions for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S coming in 2021.
