Fear the Walking Dead's Madison Clark could return in the future, according to Walking Dead universe chief content officer Scott Gimple. The first spin-off, or companion, series to spawn from AMC's The Walking Dead, Fear the Walking Dead largely focused around the Clark family when the series began in 2015. Family matriarch Madison (Kim Dickens) was quickly established as the series protagonist, fearlessly leading her family and other Los Angeles survivors through the zombie apocalypse.
In Fear the Walking Dead season 4, Madison led what was left of her family to a baseball stadium, where a rival group arrived. As the confrontation escalated, a herd of walkers swarmed the stadium, leading Madison to sacrifice herself in an attempt to save her children. Luring the walkers into the stadium, she effectively traps the walkers inside the walls and sets the stadium on fire. Madison was presumed dead by the other characters and confirmed to have been killed off the series. However, since her "death" was shown through the eyes of the other characters, there was no evidence that Madison actually died. Madison's son Nick Clark (Frank Dillane) was killed off toward the beginning of season 4, but his death was more final as the actor requested to be written off the show. Since Madison's disappearance in the season 4 midseason finale, fans have rallied for the character to make a return. Fans have held out hope that the lack of evidence of a body could mean Madison is still alive somewhere, and the creatives behind the show agree that her return is not off the table.
Chief content officer of the AMC franchise Scott Gimple tells Insider that there is still a chance that fans will see Madison again in some aspect. Whether it be in Fear the Walking Dead or another Walking Dead show, it sounds like Madison may return in some capacity.
"I believe that not only within 'Fear,' but just within the greater 'Walking Dead' universe, there's absolutely a chance that we could see Madison. There's a lot of narrative possibilities that we're exploring and then certainly, you know, [we] got to work it out with everybody involved and Kim Dickens is a very, very busy person. But I think it's entirely possible."
Gimple previously commented on Madison's possible return at New York Comic Con in October, saying "there's some possibilities with 'Tales' and [World] 'Beyond,' but not 'Beyond.'" When asked about the NYCC comment, Gimple told Insider, "It seems like the only place [Madison] might not pop up is on 'World Beyond' because we're finishing up the story." World Beyond, the second TWD spinoff, is a limited two-season series, meaning that Madison's chances at a return is narrowed down to Fear the Walking Dead or the future TWD spinoff anthology series Tales of the Walking Dead.
Madison's return was previously thought to be hinted at in season 5 of Fear the Walking Dead when John and Dwight found a tree carving that fans believed to be a reference to Madison. However, this theory was later debunked when Wes was revealed to be behind the tree messages. Season 6 recently made the biggest allusion to Madison's comeback, with Alicia suggesting a return to the stadium. It's clear that the characters themselves hold onto the belief that Madison is still alive somewhere, and Gimple's comments certainly hint to the fearless leader's return someday.
