Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life is always a comforting watch, especially during the Holiday season. There's something incredibly warm about these quirky women trying to figure out their lives. It also gave viewers a window into the lives of characters who they had religiously followed, and they were able to see them again, see where they've reached, and see what they've made of themselves.
The 4 episode miniseries had its shares of ups and downs. There were particularly hard moments, and there was of course the considerable amount of silliness that Gilmore Girls promises.
10 Funniest: Kirk's Ooober
Kirk explaining to Lorelai his new entrepreneurial venture of Ooober that closely resembled Uber was an incredibly hilarious and classic Kirk moment. To see Kirk trying out his luck in the present time Stars Hollow through a venture that absurdly closely resembles Uber, but was still many times harder to actually use, reminded fans of the naive and silly pleasures of watching characters like Kirk in the Gilmore Girls world.
9 Saddest: Richard Gilmore's Death
With Edward Herrmann's passing away, Gilmore Girls did indeed pay tribute to him and to his character Richard Gilmore in a beautiful manner. It was extremely heartbreaking to not have Richard Gilmore's distinguished presence on the show, and even more so to see Emily stumbling along without her rock by her side. Gilmore Girls was very respectful in its portrayal and fans of the show missed him dearly as well.
8 Funniest: Lorelai's Attempt To Be Outdoors
Lorelai has never been much of an outdoor person. She didn't like the woods, or camping, or even fishing. And so to watch Lorelai prepare for her "Wild" adventure was fascinating and funny. Even Luke was shocked that Lorelai was voluntarily making herself do this.
It's very out-of-character for Lorelai and in as much as the experience is meaningful for her, it is also equally funny watching her attempt it.
7 Saddest: Luke Thinking Lorelai Was Leaving Him
Luke is extremely out of it when Jess visits him. He then explains to Jess how he thinks Lorelai wants a break from him and is going to leave him. Fans of the show know how much they've been through. Luke was really worried about it, and it was the longest they had been apart from each other since they got together as well. He blames himself for everything and is sincerely upset about the prospect of not being with her.
6 Funniest: Paris Terrifying All The Kids At Chilton
To be fair, every single moment that Paris was on screen was hilarious. But this particular scene where all the kids rush out of the room in tears after listening to Paris talk was probably one of the best ones. Paris and Rory are invited back to Chilton to talk to the students and impart wisdom. While Rory does a very inspiring piece, Paris invokes The Art of War and Joseph Stalin. Her rendition of life after Chilton managed to bring the kids to tears and it was incredibly hilarious.
5 Saddest: Michel Leaving The Inn
After Sookie left, it was Lorelai and Michel were the two people left running the inn. Lorelai relied heavily on Michel as well. While it did not come as a surprise to her that Michel wanted to leave, it was still quite sad for both of them. Theirs was a fun, snarky, but loving partnership and the unfurling of its end in the Secret Bar was indeed a very sad moment.
Michel didn't want to be in the same place forever, and he even had a baby coming into his life. It was time to move ahead for him but it was a pretty sad moment to witness Michel leaving the inn he had built together with Lorelai.
4 Funniest: Rory Sleeping With A Wookie
Rory walks into the room and wakes up Lorelai from her sleep by yelling about how she slept with a Wookie. Not only was it hilarious for Lorelai, but it was for viewers as well. Rory then goes on to explain how it happened, and the details of it, along with Lorelai's quipping makes the whole situation extremely funny. For someone as put together as Rory was, this was something very unlike her and the fact of the person wearing the costume of Wookie itself added to the comedy element a lot.
3 Saddest: Rory Struggling With Her Life
Rory was valedictorian at Chilton. Then she went to Yale and graduated with flying colors. When Gilmore Girls ended, she was going to report on the then-Senator Obama's Presidential campaign. In Gilmore Girls: A Year In The Life, viewers see her breakdown when she realizes that not only does she not have a career, her love-life is pretty messed up too. Her Conde Nast and SandeeSpeaks interviews don't pan out. She's unable to find herself a good, stable job.
She's involved with an engaged Logan. It was quite sad to watch this character, who fans assumed would be in a good place in her life, flailing around aimlessly.
2 Funniest: Emily Marie Kondo-ing
Lorelai walks into the Gilmore home to find Emily in her old t-shirt and jeans, which is a funny image in itself, considering how Emily usually is always dressed to perfection. And then Emily proceeds to explain why everything in the house was in boxes because she was decluttering as per the Marie Kondo book. Emily explaining this to Lorelai, and Lorelai's reaction to Emily throwing away things that don't bring her joy, are hilarious.
1 Saddest: Jess Still Looking At Rory
It was the briefest of moments but fans of the show are sure to have noticed it and its implications. Jess appears to have grown into a really mature and sensible man in the miniseries. While the history between Jess and Rory is quite old, when Jess leaves their house, he stops for a second to look at her. It's bittersweet because fans who loved Jess and Rory together will sigh with sadness because it is such a "the one that got away" moment.
