Star Wars: 10 Things You Didn't Know About First Order Armor

The First Order is one of the most lethal armies in all of the Star Wars universe. Led by the Darth Vader-inspired Kylo Ren, these troopers are of course partially based on both the Stormtroopers before them and the Clone army before that!

Despite the links between them in terms of design, functionality, and the shared history of this dangerous unit, there's actually a lot of different things that set the First Order troopers apart from their peers. Their armor in particular is actually more unique than many audience members might expect, after years of learning from the Stormtroopers mistakes.

10 Fewer Variations

Troopers are usually designed for their territory they will be defending. In the past, there have been a huge number of variations on the troopers so that they can survive or be camouflaged in any location. But the First Order took a different approach.

While snow soldiers and elite squads do exist, a huge portion of their army actually uses the same armor. It's far more versatile and certainly cuts down costs; it's all a failing Empire could really muster together compared to the size of the original Republic and Empire.

9 Chosen For The Recognition

Part of the reason the First Order chose the design to begin with is that they hoped that it would instill a new sense of fear throughout the galaxy. Previously these Stormtroopers were associated with the atrocities of the old Empire.

By bringing them back, it would showcase that there was something to be afraid of once again. It was proven to be a successful design in the past and there was an obsession with carrying on the legacy of the Emperor himself.

8 The Body Glove

One similarity with the Stormtrooper armor which was far less common with that of the Clone Troopers, was the creation of the body glove. This was a thermal material which was worn underneath all versions of the armor.

This black material not only protected the troopers in terms of their body temperature, but it's also what gives the suits the distinctive black outline. It was also known to take a little bit of the impact from various injuries such as scrapes and could even aid in keeping wounds protected.

7 The Helmets

Previous designs involving the Clone Troopers had specialized helmets that might filter out poisons, give intel on the inside of the helmet, or contain other kinds of technology to help in the battlefield. First Order helmets are basic in comparison.

Apart from night vision and smoke filtration systems, nothing else is provided within a First Older mask. They are more durable than that of the Storm Troopers, but contain very little in the way of gadgets and intel aids, unlike Mandalorian helmets.

6 Construction Changes

One of the problems with the original Clone and Stormtrooper armor was there was a lack of flexibility. They were hard to move in and as a result ended up causing a lot of issues in confined spaces. They were not a very intelligent design.

The new First Order armor has a few differences in the joints. New materials allow for greater movement. It's easier to aim, get into cover or move quicker, which is why these new troopers were deemed so much more dangerous.

5 Hierarchy

Usually, an army such as this would utilize colored shoulder pads in order to denote rank. The First Order troopers did so, but it is well known that their Captain actually used a different type of suit to show her own place at the top.

Captain Phasma is famous for her shiny armor, but it's actually made out of Chromium. It's a much more protective piece of material and is not only therefore showcasing her rank, but also protecting her more than her own troops.

4 Wookie Protection

Stormtrooper armor had a history of crumbling under pressure. The new design, though, was created to try to take heavy impacts. This meant that the materials were slightly better and the construction was more precise.

Phasma once proclaimed that the armor could actually take on the might of a Wookie. While this may not be true, there are few instances of the First Order trooper's actually getting their armor damaged by anything other than a blaster.

3 Snow Troopers

The Snowtroopers that did exist were much more advanced than that of the original Stormtroopers. They contained thermal materials, advanced boots for the terrain, and even a helmet that decreased light flares from the ice.

They were far more dangerous and given much more protective layering. They were slightly bulkier than that of a traditional First Order trooper, but their armor could handle some of the lowest temperatures in the galaxy.

2 Faceless

The masks themselves were given a much more faceless design than in previous years. As these helmets have evolved over time they have become less and less human. This was the idea surrounding the final versions.

They would only increase the fear that they distilled, as many species confused the troopers with being far from human. This gave many troopers a higher sense of confidence and anonymity than any previous armor.

1 Changes Between Movies

Rian Johnson actually had the armors changed slightly for his installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, The Last Jedi. In fact, the director had the armors become slightly more stylized and more menacing.

He changed the color from a bright white to slightly darker, in order to make it appear grittier, with grey tones making it seem almost battle-worn and dirty. He also changed the masks so they would look even more like a skull, adding to the faceless approach the Galactic Empire was looking for.
