The Steam Winter Sale has begun, discounting indie hits like Hades and Fall Guys, among others. The end of the year is a big time for online sales, and Steam has a proud tradition of slashing prices across its digital marketplace every year come December. It's one thing that has made the digital marketplace so beloved and led to the staggeringly high player counts experienced on the service.
Though that isn't to say the website isn't without competition. The Epic Games Store has recently begun launching holiday sales of its own, using surprisingly generous discounts to lure players to its storefront. The website is offering a different game for free every day, including classics like Alien: Isolation. It's also set up a system of endless $10 coupons; when a fan buys a game with one of these coupons, a new one is automatically added to their account, and this will continue until the sale ends. It's a very generous way for fans to get a lot of games for not a lot of money, which is, after all, what these holiday sales are all about.
But Steam's sale is still going strong. Numerous titles are discounted on the platform, including indie darlings Fall Guys and Hades, both of which are available at 20% off. Gamers who are interested in a bigger discount can look into Control: Ultimate Edition and Hollow Knight, which are both half off. Legendary FPS Doom Eternal is available now at a 67% discount, none too shabby for a Game of the Year contender. No Man's Sky is also half off; players who have been following the game's years-long redemption story know that there's never been a better time to get involved in the controversial space simulator.
The holiday season remains a great time to buy into video games. This year is a special case thanks to the release of the newest console generation, represented by the PlayStation 5 and its competitor the Xbox Series X/S. As exciting as these new consoles are, they're all but impossible to actually purchase. They're sold out of all major retailers, and an army of scalpers with lightning-fast bots are lurking in wait to snap up every restock. These greedy merchants could be having a tangible and negative effect on the development of new console games. As dreadful as this is, it does make the PC gaming space look a lot more tempting.
Steam continues to live up to its reputation of providing great deals to video game fans. Anyone with a halfway decent PC is sure to find at least one discounted product that speaks to them. Thrifty gamers can take full advantage of the Steam Winter Sale right now, and keep enjoying those discounts up until the sale ends on January 5th next year.
