Donald Trump’s star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame has been boarded up to prevent further vandalism. In 2007, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce honored Trump, who was then popular in the reality TV world for his work on The Apprentice, with the public monument for his producing credits in the Miss Universe shows.
One of the best-known tourist attractions in Los Angeles, the titular stars cannot be removed once dedicated to recipients. Since the first star dedication to honor actress Joanne Woodward, the Walk of Fame has experienced numerous instances of vandalism, theft, and alterations. These include the disappearance of Gregory Peck’s star, Ronald Reagan's star being defaced, and protests at Kevin Spacey’s plaque following allegations of sexual assault. To date, Trump’s star holds the record for most acts of vandalism, including a Hulk cosplayer destroying the star and someone planting a golden toilet inscribed with the message “Take a Trump” over the marker. Now it appears Trump’s star has received some alterations.
In a video shared by Scott Budman, fans can see that the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce has covered Trump’s star with a piece of plywood and built a steel barricade around the area. Reportedly, the guardrail surrounding the star is intended to prevent visitors from tripping over the piece of plywood. As it stands, the Hollywood Historic Trust has spent thousands of dollars in repairs for Trump’s star in the past four years.
Of course, the plywood and steel barricade is merely a temporary solution for the high traffic of vandalism that the star appears to attract. It remains to be seen what measures will be taken by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to prevent further defamation of Trump’s Walk of Fame star, moving forward. At this time, the Chamber does not intend to remove Trump's plaque.
Deemed historical landmarks, the 2,690 stars on the Walk of Fame have certainly experienced highs and lows over the years. Toting a price tag of $40,000, a plaque doesn’t constitute an automatic honor in the entertainment world. Of course, while notable celebrities have a presence on the Walk of Fame, others, such as Clint Eastwood, Oprah Winfrey, and Spike Lee, remain legendary in the entertainment industry without a star embedded in the streets of Hollywood. For now, Donald Trump’s star on the Walk of Fame appears to be safe from further vandalism.
