Rob Zombie is one of the most distinct filmmakers working in the horror genre today. While he was given the chance to helm the iconic franchise Halloween for its reboot, his most popular work is from the so-called Firefly trilogy centered around the Firefly family that includes the sadistic Otis Driftwood.
Otis is played by character actor Bill Moseley who gives a great and deranged performance throughout the trilogy. Though he is a captivating character, Otis is also a vile murderer who is responsible for some of the trilogy's most terrifying and brutal moments. Have a look back at the madness of Otis in the Firefly trilogy.
10 Ranting To The Cheerleaders
When it comes to introducing such a strange character in the first movie, Rob Zombie concocts a twisted scene worthy of this madman. In House of 1000 Corpses, Otis is introduced giving a long, rambling rant about how the only proper response to the chaos of the world is to create more chaos.
While the speech is bizarre enough, the scene gets even worse as it is finally revealed who his audience is. Three terrified cheerleaders are bound and gagged, forced to listen to this crazy speech before being killed by Otis.
9 Burning Aquarius
The third movie in the trilogy, Three From Hell, is generally regarded as the weakest of the series and somewhat unnecessary. But it can't be said that it doesn't have plenty of freaky moments, especially from Otis.
In the latter half of the movie, the Firefly family hide out in a Mexican town where a local gangster named Aquarius attempts to take revenge on them for killing his father. The trio of murderers overpower the gangster and put him inside a coffin filled with gasoline. Then Otis laughs as they burn the man alive.
8 Face Peeling
Otis has a lot of disturbing habits, but perhaps the most unsettling is his penchant for skinning his victims. While this is usually done when the victims are dead, one unlikely woman gets the treatment while she is still alive.
After the woman and her husband try to capture Otis for the reward money, Otis manages to kill the husband. He then ties her to a tree, cuts her face off, and pins it to the tree opposite to her so she is forced to look at her own face as she bleeds to death.
7 The Devil's Work
Otis is never content just to kill his victims, he wants to torment them for as long as possible before he finishes them off. In The Devil's Rejects, Otis takes a couple of men hostage to go out to the desert to retrieve some guns.
After the men briefly try to fight back, Otis overpowers them. He forces one of the men to pray for mercy. After the man is done, Otis callously tells him that it won't work anyway explaining that he is the devil and he's come to do the devil's work.
6 Free Bird Shootout
The Devil's Rejects features one of the most famous horror movie endings of all time and one that many fans feel would have been a fitting end for these characters. After barely escaping a vengeful lawman who tried to kill them, the family makes their way down the highway before encountering a heavily armed police roadblock.
With Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Free Bird" playing, Otis hands out guns to the rest of his injured family then puts drives at full speed towards the roadblock, firing wildly at the police and getting themselves filled with bullets.
5 Home Invasion
Three From Hell finds Otis and Baby Firefly in prison and looking to reunite with each other. Otis manages to escape with the help of his half-brother Winslow. They then break into the home of the prison warden keeping Baby locked up where there is an extended and disturbing sequence of torture.
Otis spends days abusing and threatening the helpless victims while it is clear things are not going to end well for the innocent people. The horrific sequence ends with the hostages all being brutally killed once Baby is free.
4 Killing The Clown
Zombie infuses these movies with moments of dark comedy which often adds to the insanity of these movies. In Three From Hell, the nightmarish home invasion scene is interrupted when a traveling clown stops in at the house.
Soon the clown finds himself a hostage as well and Otis tells the clown to make him laugh or he will be killed. When the clown's routine doesn't work, Otis prepares to shoot him. But when the clown wets himself in fear, it does make Otis laugh. But he still skills the clown all the same.
3 The Reveal Of Fishboy
House of 1000 Corpses features an early role from Rainn Wilson, years before he would play Dwight Schrute on The Office. Wilson plays Bill, one of the ill-fated travelers who have the bad fortune of running into the Firefly family.
After the group of travelers is attacked and kidnapped, Otis shows Bill's girlfriend what became of him. After torturing Bill all night, Otis killed Bill and turned his body into some bizarre sideshow attraction where his corpse is sewed into the body of a fish.
2 Motel Hostage Situation
Whenever Otis takes people hostage, you can bet it is going to be a deeply uncomfortable thing to watch. This extended motel sequence in which Otis holds several people at gunpoint is perhaps going too far even with this twisted trilogy.
There are moments of grotesque and horrific abuse, shocking executions, and it all ends with Otis once again skinning someone's face and using it to torment the other victims. It is a hard scene to watch and one that cements Otis as a nasty and evil man.
1 Dressing Up Like Daddy
One subplot in House of 1000 Corpses involves the father of one of the kidnap victims coming in search of his daughter along with some local police. Of course, the Firefly family will not be stopped so easily and soon the father and the police are killed by Otis.
However, Otis takes that opportunity to inflict some more psychological torture on his victims. He skins the body of the father and dresses himself in it. He then parades around the house, tormenting the poor girl with the dead face of her own father.
