Sex And The City: 5 Times Carrie Was A Huge Freeloader (& 5 When She Was Super Generous)

Carrie Bradshaw from Sex and the City doesn’t have the best reputation when it comes to doing things for others, At times, she could be pretty self-serving and entitled and having the privilege of successful friends also meant she was used to people pampering her. And let’s face it, Carrie loved being splurged on, maybe a bit too much, and she loved splurging on herself too, as much her freelance checks would let her.

But then again, she could be the most generous and giving friend there is. She appreciated her squad a lot because they always stand by her on her bad days, and she made several generous gestures to prove her dedication to them.

10 Generous: She Took Her Friends To Fashion Weeks

Carrie was the only high fashion connect for the group, though Samantha and Charlotte had showbiz contacts, Carrie was the one with the haute credibility and reputation. So, all the fashion weeks the girls go to in the series or even in the films are all courtesy of Carrie.

Funny enough, Samantha is a publicist and can get the squad access to some very high-profile Hollywood events, but not everyone and anyone from showbiz can be seated at the FROW with their friends at major runway shows, and for Carrie, her friends always got special treatment.

9 Freeloader: She Let Amalita Buy Her Dolce And Gabbana

Carrie’s credit card gets declined during her shopping trip and that’s where she bumps into her old friend Amalita, who’s insanely rich and married to a European millionaire. Amalita tells Carrie that she wants to pay for her expensive shoes, and though Carrie is reluctant about accepting the favor, she eventually agrees.

This marks a pattern in her behavior where she would agree to people doing stuff for her, no questions asked, be it Big buying her a penthouse or a really expensive Judith Leiber purse, or tagging along with Samantha to Abu Dhabi.

8 Generous: She Took Her Friends To Mexico

The trip was most likely paid for by Big, who was supposed to go on a honeymoon with Carrie after their wedding, but of course, Mr. Big ruthlessly stood her up at the altar. Carrie’s friends suggested that she should get out of town just to get her mind off things.

Carrie agrees and decides to take her friends along, and although it was mostly for her own benefit since she didn’t wanna be alone, the trip was clearly needed by all the four girls because they were all quite traumatized by what had happened at the wedding.

7 Freeloader: When Carrie Demanded Charlotte Help Her Out Financially

It’s one thing to discuss your bad finances with your friends, or maybe even asking them for a loan, but Carrie was totally entitled when she demanded that Charlotte help her out with her money problems. Carrie was famously bad at budgeting and was about to lose her apartment.

All her friends agree to step in and lend her some money, which she happily accepts, but when Charlotte refuses to mix her money with her personal relationships, Carrie behaves like a petulant child and demands an explanation.

6 Generous: Gives Louise A Louis Vuitton Bag

Louise helped Carrie get through the most difficult phase of her life and after her rather ugly split with Mr. Big, Carrie makes some changes in her life and starts afresh. She hires Louis as an assistant as she begins taking on more professional commitments.

It’s only fitting that the famous fashionista should opt for something high fashion to give to Louise, who simply loves designer bags and rents them for special occasions. So as a way to thank her for all that she did, Carrie buys Louise a limited edition Neon Noir Monogram Motard Firebird Bag from Louis Vuitton.

5 Freeloader: Gets A Magazine Cover From Stanford’s Boyfriend

Carrie luckily had some very resourceful, well-placed friends who helped her get noticed and were also her biggest cheerleaders. This is not to say that she wasn’t talented, but being friends with Stanford helped her find footing in the fashion industry.

Not only did she get booked for a fashion show, but she also got chosen to star in her own magazine cover, which was a terrific opportunity considering Carrie was only moderately successful. But Carrie didn’t exactly make the most of her opportunity when she showed up for the photoshoot late and not looking her best.

4 Generous: Took Care Of Samantha When She Had The Flu

There’s no doubt that Carrie was a kind and giving friend and, at times, she would go out of her way to be there for her friends. So when Samantha unexpectedly gets the flu and has no one to take care of her, Carrie steps up and takes care of her by helping her with the medication and also making Samantha’s mum’s special cure for her.

Carrie and Samantha share a special bond, which may even be the strongest dynamic in the group, because they have known each other the longest.

3 Freeloader: When She Let Big Buy Her A Penthouse

It was only after Miranda drew her attention to the weirdness of the situation that Carrie had second thoughts about Mr. Big buying a penthouse for them. Carrie and Big wanted to live together and were looking at houses when they came across a penthouse that was way over their budget. Big says he will take care of the payment for the place, and Carrie happily agrees to the setup.

This was quite strange because why wouldn’t Carrie want to chip in, since it would only help her pull her weight? Carrie was in her early 40s and simply let her boyfriend buy an expensive penthouse for them to live in, without even giving it a second thought.

2 Generous: When She Prioritized Aleksandr’s Career

This was a crucial point in Carrie's trajectory. On one hand, she had always wanted to live in Paris, given her relationship with fashion. But moving to Paris also meant putting Aleksandr first since he was going there for work. For someone as freedom-loving as Carrie, moving continents just for love is quite unthinkable, but she did try to take a chance and she also really appreciated Aleksandr’s art and wanted him to succeed, so she agrees to move to Paris to be with him.

Once in Paris, she makes some adjustments so Aleksandr could have all the space he needed, which was a generous move on her part, although it didn’t end well.

1 Freeloader: She Went On A Fully Sponsored Abu Dhabi Trip

To be fair, this wasn't all on Carrie - Miranda and Charlotte also agreed to tag along with Samantha to Abu Dhabi where she was being hosted for a work trip. But it was pretty typical of Carrie to mooch off her friends’ cushy jobs, something she has done quite a bit over the course of her life.

Carrie never went for the steady paycheck route, she’s a columnist who writes for some of the most esteemed publications, but at the end of the day, she’s a freelancer. She has never really treated her friends or splurged on them in significant ways, however, she has happily let them pamper her. The Abu Dhabi trip was an example of how much loves Carrie enjoys living the good life when someone else is paying.
