Shazam!'s director posted a cheeky response to Dwayne Johnson’s workout photo. Johnson is set to star as Black Adam in the upcoming DCEU film of the same name, and spinoff to 2019’s Shazam!, directed by David F. Sandberg. Originally known as Captain Marvel, Shazam first appeared in Fawcett Comics back in 1939 and centered around a young boy named Billy Batson who could transform into the adult hero by speaking the name of the ancient wizard, “Shazam." Later acquired by DC, along with his rogue's gallery, including Black Adam, Shazam has gone on to become one of the universe’s most popular heroes, ranked, in terms of power, on par with DC’s iconic Superman.
Relative to the on-going debate of who is actually stronger between Superman and “the Big Red Cheese,” it is widely believed that the power of Black Adam surpasses both of them. The Black Adam solo film, directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, will detail how Shazam’s arch-foe and diametric opposite came into being. Johnson, former WWE superstar known as "The Rock", and currently the highest paid actor in Hollywood, will be bringing his unmatched passion to the role he’s wanted for a long time, as well as his superhuman physique. He regularly shares his fitness pics on Instagram in conjunction with the film, recently wearing a Black Adam t-shirt, and reaffirming his character’s superiority, stating — “... The hierarchy of power in the DC UNIVERSE is about to change.”
Sandberg, who is also helmed to direct the Shazam! sequel, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, had some fun calling out Johnson in his own Instagram post. Borrowing Johnson’s “... The hierarchy of power ...” quote, Sandberg playfully posed sporting his own title’s insignia, albeit looking far less super. You can check out their posts below:
Although there are no confirmed plans, as of yet, for when and where Shazam, played by Zachary Levi, and Johnson’s Black Adam will cross paths, Sandberg has stated that he would like to see it happen. Despite having no direct involvement with the Black Adam movie, Sandberg maintains a loving rivalry with the slated picture, even tweeting out a hilarious picture mocking Black Adam's costume last year. The two characters have faced off before, with Superman in the mix, in 2010’s animated Superman / Shazam!: The Return of Black Adam. In that feature Black Adam was almost too much for “the Man of Steel” and “Earth’s Mightiest Mortal” combined, lending further weight and validity to Johnson’s statement regarding DC’s balance of power and his impending arrival.
Is Black Adam truly as strong as Johnson claims? The standing argument is that Black Adam is powered by magic, one of Superman’s most notable vulnerabilities. Although his abilities are on par with that of Shazam, Adam has had centuries more training and battle experience than either of them, which would arguably give him an extreme edge. Only time will tell what his true capabilities are, however, when Black Adam hits theaters.
