The Boys Comic Creator Helps Write Dialogue For One TV Show Character

The Boys' comic creator Garth Ennis helps with the dialogue for one particular character on the hit Amazon Prime show. Along with Darick Robertson, Ennis crafted the gritty and profane world of The Boys, where superheroes are highly corrupt modern day celebrities. Eric Kripke adapted The Boys for Amazon Prime last year and turned it into a cultural sensation. The series centers on the titular vigilante group who aim to take down the Seven, the most powerful and influential team of superheroes in the world. The Boys season 2 debuted on Amazon this past fall and reached even greater heights in terms of critical acclaim and viewership.

The Boys is populated with numerous colorful characters, from the sadistic Seven leader Homelander (Antony Starr) to foul-mouthed Billy Butcher (Karl Urban). Season 2 ended with something of a reset for everyone, as Homelander found himself sorely defeated and the Boys, thinking they've won, branched off on their own. However, fans know all too well that Homelander won't stay down for long, and that the mysterious head-popping supe Victoria Neuman (Claudia Doumit) is still at large. Luckily, The Boys season 3 is already in the works.

Kripke recently reflected on all things The Boys with Consequence of Sound and shared an interesting tidbit about Ennis' involvement with the show. Kripke spoke highly of Ennis and his willingness to cooperate with the series, though there was one thing Ennis cared about the most: "'Just get Butcher right,'" he told Kripke. Yes, Kripke turns to Ennis for final passes at Butcher's dialogue. He explained:

So, I’ve really tried to do that. I’ve sent him every script to this day. I even just sent him episode three of Season 3 yesterday because, to this day, he wants to weigh in on Butcher’s dialogue. And I’m happy to have him do it because he knows Butcher’s dialogue better than I do, and he knows British slang way better than me, so I’m happy to have him pitch suggestions. He says Butcher is his favorite character that he’s created, so he’s very protective of him. But he’s pretty open to the rest of it. He gets it. He gets that it’s inherently a different medium.

Perhaps more than anyone on The Boys, Butcher has a very distinctive way of speaking. Through lots of curse words and British slang, Butcher's voice is vital toward capturing the very essence of the show. It makes perfect sense for Kripke to collaborate with Ennis on his lines, since who else in this world would know what Butcher would say at any given moment? This is a nice way of keeping Ennis involved with The Boys, and it definitely adds to the overall quality of the show.

Butcher ended The Boys season 2 in a very difficult place, having just lost his wife Becca (Shantel VanSanten) for good. As to where that will leave him for season 3, fans certainly don't know, but it doesn't look promising. Odds are, Butcher will be even more unhinged when The Boys returns, and perhaps will be even more determined to end the supes once and for all. Either way, fans can trust that whatever comes out of his mouth will be Ennis-approved.
