Walking Dead Rick Grimes Movie Hopes To Film In Spring 2021

Andrew Lincoln says the Walking Dead Rick Grimes movie could finally begin filming in spring 2021 if the COVID-19 vaccine roll-out goes as planned. Lincoln is best known for playing Rick Grimes for nine seasons on the hit AMC zombie show, though he infamously left at the end of season 9 with plans for a series of movies focused on the character in mind. Despite season 9 ending over 18 months ago, cameras have still not rolled on the project.

The Walking Dead's chief creative officer Scott Gimple says the plan is still to make a trilogy for release in theaters. It's still unclear what the movies will cover, with the core series moved far into the future compared to when audiences last saw Rick. However, a plan is connected to expanding the larger Walking Dead universe, with the core series ending after an extended season 11. The Walking Dead: The World Beyond star Annet Mahendru has confirmed that series will lead straight into the first Rick Grimes movie, but with that show still set to air its second season, where and when the movies will take place is anyone's guess.

Lincoln dropped the first piece of news on the Walking Dead Rick Grimes movies in a long time, telling ABC that the ongoing coronavirus pandemic delayed plans to shoot the film. However, the report quotes Lincoln as saying he's hopeful the first movie will finally start filming in spring 2021, so long as the vaccine roll-out is successful. Lincoln compares the vaccine to the "cavalry coming," clearly hoping it will allow stalled film projects to pick up again. You can read his full comments, along with ABC's reference to the Rick Grimes movie, below:

Lincoln’s own plans, which include a Walking Dead movie, have been forestalled by the pandemic, though he hopes the film will start shooting in the spring. “It does feel like there is a certain sense of positivity and the cavalry’s coming with the vaccines,” he said. “And there’s a real sort of sense of a renewal, hopefully."

The news is positive for Rick Grimes fans hoping the character would show up in season 2 of The World Beyond. Gimple confirmed that wouldn't happen, despite the show's connection to the movies, so audiences will have to wait for the film to see the iconic character's return. Filming needs to start soon, though, as The Walking Dead franchise already seems to be running out of steam.

The core show is ending for a reason, and despite AMC's efforts to expand the universe with new shows and spinoffs, fans aren't tuning in in the numbers they used to. The hope is the Rick Grimes movies will re-ignite that interest in The Walking Dead, though it's debatable even a high-budget theatrical experience will be able to do that. Lincoln's Grimes is a very popular character, so hopefully, production can happen soon to get the first movie in theaters as quickly as possible.
