Bridgerton is one of Netflix's greatest hits of the year. The period drama is part Gossip Girl, part Downtown Abbey and completely intoxicating. The plots are scandalous, the costumes are to die for, and the characters are too good to be true. The women characters, in particular, have really gotten people talking. In a time where women were to be seen and not heard, the ladies of Bridgerton pushed just about every boundary possible.
There are so many brilliant characters who use their wits to get what they want in life. If we had to go and rank the characters of Bridgerton by their intelligence, this is how these ten favorite characters would fall.
11 Siena Rosso
She is an opera singer and spends most of season one involved with Anthony Bridgerton. She has the voice of an angel but no true intellectual skills. Her skills include things like landing a well-to-do man who will take care of her and provide for her, and making her way in a society that sees her as lower-class because of her work. She could be considered intelligent for wanting to live without the limits of marriage and high society, and for persuading men to support her, but her clear love for Anthony gets in the way of even that.
10 Benedict Bridgerton
The middle Benedict brother comes off as carefree and in no rush to marry and sire children, but he is no dummy. He gravitates to the art community desiring to turn his hobby into a true career in some way. Knowledge of the arts, as Benedict displays, often goes hand in hand with intelligence. It might not be math and reading oriented, but a deep appreciation and understanding of the art realm likely mean that Benedict had plenty going on between his ears.
9 Lady Featherington
She doesn't originally strike viewers as smart and savvy, but when her husband turns down a perfectly palatable marriage prospect for their daughter, she knows something is up. She decides to put her sleuthing skills to the test and uncovers her husband's treasure trove of secrets. He has managed to land the family in serious financial debt. Lady Featherington can't remedy the issue at hand, but she was smart enough to figure out what was going on.
8 Anthony Bridgerton
Anthony is the eldest Bridgerton brother, and he is the one charged with seeking respectable companions for his siblings when they reach marriage age. Anthony is a smart guy, but he is often clouded in his decisions by love and honor.
He tries to marry his sister off to someone she does not fancy and almost duels with his best friend; neither were super-intelligent moves on his part, but he felt compelled to do what he thought best. In terms of love, he should settle down and marry, as he is the family heir, but his desire for Siena gets in the way of that for some time.
7 Marina Thompson
Marina is a distant Featherton cousin who comes to London to be introduced into high society and land herself a husband. While she catches everyone's immediate attention, her pregnancy throws a real kink in any marriage plans. Mariana is nearly bright enough to snag Colin Bridgerton as a suitor (Mrs. Whistledown managed to bungle that up nicely,) but she also displays acts of dense thinking. For example, ingesting herbs and teas to end her gestation could have done serious damage to her in the process. That wasn't a genius move.
6 Simon Basset
If this were a list about the best looking characters in Bridgerton, the Duke of Hastings would have shot straight to the top. He is swoon-worthy, and who doesn't love a bad boy, but is he super smart? As a child, he obviously was gifted. While he had some speech issues, he excelled in all other areas of learning. His emotional immaturity and inability to move past his heaping load of daddy abandonment issues sit him firmly in the middle of the intelligence ranking.
5 Cressida Cowper
Daphne's nemesis isn't the smartest lady on the list, but she is no nitwit either. When it came time to draw the Prince's affections, Cressida managed to turn his head for a spell. She was intelligent enough to engage in some covert stalking of Daphne in the evening hours.
She is savage, yes, but she knows that in this world, sometimes savagery is the only way to climb the ranks and end up where you want to be, especially if you are a woman.
4 Lady Danbury
When Simon's father turned him out, it was Lady Danbury who took him in and made him the man we see today. She can stand up to any man or woman without flinching or breaking a sweat. When Simon's father, the Duke of Hastings, got loud and outrageous, and she put him in his place. Lady Danbury knows what is best for her handsome charge even when he can not quite see it for himself. She is a force to be reckoned with in the court.
3 Eloise Bridgeton
Eloise is the younger, more studious sister of Daphne Bridgerton, the prized jewel of high society. While Daphne is set on designing her own future by landing the man of her dreams, Eloise would be far happier surrounded by books and studies, not suitors. She is a brilliant mind and fears that her talents in the academic realm will go to waste should she do as she is told and settle down to marry in the near future.
2 Penelope Featherington
Penelope Featherington isn't one of the season's most desirable marital prospects, but she is smarter, and a better catch than anyone gives her credit for. The entire season has the gang wondering who this Lady Whistledown is as she is the voice behind every rumor and wonder in high society. Welp, our girl Penelope was behind the ruse the entire time. She managed to keep churning out those juicy papers out all while hiding her secret from everyone. Intelligent indeed.
1 Daphne Bridgerton
She is only eighteen years old, and at the beginning of the season, Daphne is certainly wet behind the ears, but this doesn't mean that Ms. Bridgerton isn't a smart cookie. She quickly shows viewers that she is no wallflower and no meek and mild lady who will bend to a man's will. Daphne Bridgerton will control her own destiny and play her cards just right to get what she wants in life. She may not have the academic intelligence of some others, but her social intelligence and emotional intelligence are without peer.
