Warning: contains spoilers for Cable #7!
Cable is best known as the leader of the original X-Force - Marvel's hard-living '90s antihero team. Over time, he grew away from the team and became a solo act, but now Marvel is teasing a reunion of the old-school X-Force team in Cable #7, by writer Gerry Duggan and artist Phil Noto. The issue is in stores now.
The original X-Force was formed from the remains of the New Mutants. Originally founded by Professor X, the team had remained mentor-less until Cable, the son of Cyclops stepped in. Under Cable’s guidance, the team began to abandon Professor X’s bright and hopeful vision and moved towards a darker, more militaristic way of doing things. Whereas the X-Men opted for a non-lethal approach to fighting their enemies, X-Force had no such qualms. Among the team’s earliest members were Shatterstar, Cannonball, Domino and Warpath. During the X-Cutioner’s Song storyline, Cable was seemingly killed fighting his clone Stryfe, and Cannonball took over leadership duties. Cable eventually returned but save for a team of fugitive mutants he led that was referred to unofficially as “X-Force,” he has had little to do with the team since.
In his latest mission, Cable is searching for mutant babies that have been kidnapped by the mysterious Order of X; a cult that worships mutants. Assisting Cable is his half-sister Rachel Summers, who helps him track some of the missing babies to an Order of X house near Philadelphia. After rescuing the kids, Cable reads the mind of the house’s leader and makes a shocking discovery: the leader is not actually affiliated with the cult; he is actually working for Stryfe! Cable realizes he is going to need help if he wants to take down Stryfe, and at issue’s end he turns to an old friend and teammate: Domino!
Cable asks Domino to help him, though explains he knows it may be a little too weird. This version of Cable is actually a teenage version of X-Force's old leader who killed his future self after judging him to have gone soft. On top of this, Domino and the older Cable were longtime lovers and teammates, and Stryfe their recurring enemy... who also happens to be a clone of the original Cable. As Domino says, "Of course it's gonna be weird. When has that ever stopped us?"
X-Force was one of the biggest titles of the early 1990s, and part of the reason was because of characters such as Cable, Domino and Stryfe. While it remains to be seen if this will morph into an even larger reunion with the return of characters like Shatterstar and Cannonball, seeing Cable and Domino team up to head into battle against Stryfe is a treat for old-school X-Force fans.
