Players who defeat The Predator will be able to use its iconic cloaking device for themselves in Fortnite, but some think it provides an unfair advantage. The classic 80’s sci-fi monster is the latest licensed character to come to Fortnite as a playable character skin, bringing with him a series of Jungle Hunter Quests as part of the game’s Season 5 Battle Pass last week.
Also included in this batch of content is the Predator’s infamous cloaking wrist gauntlet, which the notorious alien hunter has used to stalk the likes of Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jesse Ventura, Danny Glover, and countless other action stars throughout all four Predator movies and numerous comics, games, and spin-off films. In fact, players initially encounter the Predator using this invisibility tech during its guest appearance in Fortnite and can claim the device for themselves once the creature is defeated in a boss battle.
However, not everybody is happy with this new equipment. The Gamer reports that players are complaining that Fortnite’s take on the Predator’s classic cloaking gauntlet is too powerful. The device allows players to move around a map completely undetected, which some fans think is too much of an unfair edge over opponents. There are some trade-offs to the ability, as it only lasts for a limited time, players can’t fire their weapons while cloaked, and the device de-activates when its user comes into contact with water - just like when the Predator touches water in the movies.
The Predator is far from the first guest character to grace Fortnite over the past few months, as Epic’s massively successful multiplayer Battle Royale shooter has seen visits from God Of War’s Kratos, Halo’s Master Chief, and The Mandalorian’s Din Djarin and Grogu throughout Season 5. He won’t be the last either, as Epic has recently begun hinting that The Terminator and his longtime target/arch-nemesis Sarah Conner are set to appear in Fortnite at some point in the near future.
In the meantime, players are in the midst of an out-of-game battle of their own regarding how overpowered the Predator’s cloaking gauntlet is in Fortnite. On one hand, it looks like the game provides plenty of drawbacks to the device to provide some balance, but it still gives players the ability to scout their enemies undetected, which could be easy to exploit. Should this argument persist, Epic might decide to further nerf the Predator's wrist-mounted invisibility device in a later update, but for now, fans will have to keep their eyes peeled for any opponents hunting them down Predator-style in Fortnite.
