Marvel Just Announced A New 'Heroes Reborn' Event Coming This April

Marvel Comics has just announced a new Heroes Reborn event, 25 years after the original. While there's not much to go on at the moment, it seems likely that the Avengers will be undergoing a brand new reboot once Jason Aaron's current Phoenix Force arc concludes. Additionally, it seems as though the Earth's Mightiest Heroes may disappear, leaving the rest of the world wondering where they might have gone.

The original Heroes Reborn was an event Marvel Comics ran back in 1996, seeing several heroes such as the Avengers and Fantastic Four getting rebooted with new origins that were more fleshed out and modernized, as well as new looks and styles for their costumes and overall aesthetics. Essentially, it was Marvel's first attempt at creating an alternate universe akin to the much more successful Ultimate Universe of the early 2000's. The work was outsourced to former Marvel employees who had just started Image Comics, including Jim Lee and Rob Liefeld. While Jim Lee's WildStorm Studios took the lead on rebooting Iron Man and the Fantastic Four, Liefeld's Extreme Studios took care of Captain America and The Avengers, though those character reboots would eventually transfer over to Lee as well. Eventually, the event was cancelled after about a year due to less than stellar sales.

1996's Heroes Reborn was released following the aftermath of Marvel's Onslaught storyline, and the reboot event was narratively explained by having the Avengers and Fantastic Four disappear after the final battle, leaving the rest of the world believing them to have died. Instead, they were all transported to a pocket-universe created by Franklin Richards, the son of Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Woman. Not knowing what had occurred to them, the heroes lived out their new rebooted lives, at least until the Celestials discovered Franklin's universe and forced all of the heroes to return back to their own reality in the following Heroes Return storyline.

Now that there's a new Heroes Reborn on the horizon, does this mean that the Avengers will be transported to another reality with new reboots once more? Will the Avengers of the 616 Universe interact with the past Heroes Reborn versions of themselves? The tagline in the teaser poster asks the question: "Whatever happened to the Earth's Mightiest Heroes?" This does seem to indicate that the Avengers will disappear, and brings to mind DC titles such as Alan Moore's Whatever Happened To The Man Of Tomorrow, or Neil Gaiman's Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader, both of which, respectively, imagined endings for Superman and Batman.

So will this new Heroes Reborn see an "end" for the Avengers before a new Rebirth begins? Marvel's King in Black is currently underway, which has seen the entire Marvel Universe affected due to Knull the Symbiote God's invasion. Will its conclusion see the Avengers disappear like they did after Onslaught? While DC Comics is typically the publisher to use the "Rebirth" verbiage for their reboots and character relaunches, it seems as though Marvel is looking to make some new headway in this area as well when Heroes Reborn comes for the Avengers this April.
