Jason Isaacs Wants to Reprise His Star Wars: Rebels Role in The Mandalorian

Jason Isaacs has expressed interest in reprising his Star Wars: Rebels role of the Imperial Grand Inquisitor for The Mandalorian. The latter show has already brought back voice actors from animated Star Wars projects to play their characters in live-action, like Katee Sackhoff’s Bo-Katan Kryze. That leaves the door open for more reprisals, and Isaacs’s Inquisitor would certainly be an interesting character to resurrect.

Resurrection is an apt word for the potential return of the Grand Inquisitor’s return. Isaacs played the main antagonist for season one of Rebels – an imposing figure and leader of the Empire’s Inquisitorius, whose task was to hunt down and kill any remaining Jedi. However, Isaac’s Grand Inquisitor died at the end of the show’s first season after a duel with Kanan Jarrus. That would seemingly preclude him from appearing in any Star Wars story set after Rebels, but a recent plotline in the comics makes it possible. In a 2020 issue, it was revealed that Darth Vader was able to save the spirit of the Grand Inquisitor, binding him to an ancient Jedi temple on the planet Tempes, where he was cursed to guard for all eternity.

That leaves the possibility of the Grand Inquisitor returning in the new live-action Disney+ family of shows, and his original voice actor is interested in reprising the role. Speaking with Collider, Jason Isaacs said he would be opening to returning after seeing Katee Sackhoff bring her character to live-action so successfully. “Katee had a very good time,” Isaacs said. “The Inquisitor was a great part when I played it and if the Inquisitor was a great part again, I’d be up for it.”

Given the Grand Inquisitor’s current entrapment on Tempes, it’s unlikely that he’d become a major character again any time soon. However, with the new Ahsoka Tano spinoff show in the works, there could be plenty of reasons to visit hidden Jedi temples. A showdown between Ahsoka and the Grand Inquisitor during her search for Thrawn and Ezra Bridger could be a cool fight and a great cameo opportunity for Isaacs to briefly reprise his role.

Recently, Isaacs’s name has also been thrown around as a popular fan cast to play Thrawn himself. He’s been featured on a long speculative list that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Jon Hamm, Robert Downey Jr. and Lars Mikkelsen, who voiced Thrawn in Rebels. Given that Isaacs has already played a major villain from the Imperial era, it seems more likely that he’d return as the Grand Inquisitor than the Grand Admiral. Perhaps fans will get to see that reprisal as the world of The Mandalorian continues to expand.
