PS5's Best-Looking Controller Is One You Can't Actually Buy

For taking part in PlayStation 5's historic launch, Sony awarded the PlayStation 5 Launch Team with a luxurious, gold and white DualSense controller that fans simply won't be able to get their hands on. When Sony first unveiled the look of its new console last summer, fans began to eagerly anticipate news of replaceable plates and customizable extras for the console and controller. Unfortunately, the hardware manufacturer has yet to announce any such customization options officially.

PlayStation 5 owners who spruce up the console's predominantly white color scheme have been left to either decorate their devices themselves or rely on third-party offerings. At least the third-party options are affordable, barring the limited edition, 18-karat gold PS5 model that's comically valued at about $2 million, of course.

Now there's another cool-looking design that most PS5 owners won't be able to purchase. On a LinkedIn post, PlayStation's Product Design Manager Joey Rabbitt (via GamesRadar), who served as Design Lead on the PlayStation App's new iteration, shared pictures of the gifts Sony awarded the PS5 Launch Team. A plaque and piece of apparel emblazoned with "PS5 Launch Team" represents a couple of the items. However, the gift PlayStation fans are bound to covet most is a white and gold DualSense; it's just as stunning as it sounds.

Since there were gold-colored PlayStation controllers in the past, specifically for DualShock 3 and DualShock 4, it stands to reason a gold DualSense may one day hit the market. Such a design probably won't be as stylish as the one Sony awarded its employees, however. But players can get their hands on something that looks fairly similar, thanks to swappable DualSense faceplates from Decor Evolve. The vendor currently has 10 different colored faceplates to choose from on its online storefront, each of which are priced at $10.

If and when Sony will start releasing its own swappable pieces remains to be seen. It's possible the company is waiting until it can more reliably keep the console itself in stock. Since the system's launch last fall, there's been a worldwide shortage on PS5 hardware. Thankfully, various retailers may have more stock on the way. Reports suggest that Target is expected to receive more PS5s sometime this week. Earlier today, GameStop announced that its online store will have a limited supply of PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch bundles available tomorrow.
