MCU Phase 4: Could A Marvel Team Red Movie Happen? | Screen Rant

With so much news dropping recently about the MCU Phase 4, is it possible a Team Red movie from the comics could happen? Though not an officially named team in the Marvel comics, Spider-Man, Deadpool and Daredevil have teamed up from time to time to fight crime. Fans have affectionately dubbed the dysfunctional threesome Team Red for their shared red costume color scheme.

For a number of years, the thought of seeing a live-action Team Red team-up was a pipe dream. In the early years of the MCU, the movie rights to Spider-Man belonged to Sony while the movie rights to Deadpool belonged to 20th Century Fox. While the rights to Daredevil were with Marvel, the character first anchoring the Marvel Netflix universe meant it was unlikely he'd ever appear in the movies: Those were the days of the deep divide between the Marvel Television division and Marvel Studios, with the studio end of things making a point to ensure the Marvel Netflix universe existed as separately from its movie universe as possible.

But now, there's a real possibility a Team Red movie could happen in Phase 4. Logistical and legal events have unfolded that have considerably changed things in the last few years. Disney bought Fox and thus Marvel regained the rights to Deadpool, with an R-rated Deadpool 3 movie on the way and confirmed as being part of the MCU. Rumors have abounded that Charlie Cox will be reprising his role of Daredevil in Spider-Man 3. While Marvel hasn't officially confirmed those reports, in interviews in recent weeks in the leadup to WandaVision's release, Marvel Studios head honcho Kevin Feige has adopted a teasing "anything's possible" attitude in regard to being asked about Cox's MCU involvement - which, historically, has been the tight-lipped exec's way of all but confirming a "yes."

There are a number of ways a team-up could happen, as well. It seems unlikely Spider-Man 3 would be a pure Team Red movie. With so many villains confirmed and Spider-Man actors Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire rumored to be reprising their respective Spider-Men roles, it's likelier that any appearance by Cox (or, perhaps, even Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool) would be more cameo roles. A better option might be Deadpool 3. In the past, when the franchise was still with Fox, the third Deadpool movie was aiming at an X-Force ensemble movie. Now that it's with Marvel, however, it's safe to assume those plans were scrapped in favor of something that fits into the MCU. Perhaps a movie with Daredevil and Spider-Man? It's also worth noting that a number of Marvel movie release dates more than two years out are currently being held with "Untitled Marvel Movie" placeholders, as is standard procedure for the studio, so those are also big question marks at the moment.

If Marvel could pull off a Team Red movie, it would be impressive. One of the reasons the trio is so beloved in the comics is that their disparate and wildly different personalities make them endearingly dysfunctional. The ever-quippy Spider-Man is, for once, verbally run over by the motormouthed Deadpool, and it leads to constant bickering between them with poor Daredevil as the one stuck in the middle as the team dad. It would be difficult to pull off in live-action, however, due to the contrasting tones of the franchises. The youthful and naive Peter Parker doesn't necessarily jive easily with the hard R-rated violence of Deadpool, nor even the dark and brooding tones of Daredevil. Still, if any studio can find a way to fit the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, the Merc with a Mouth, and the Devil of Hell's Kitchen into the same movie in the MCU Phase 4 (or beyond) and make it work, it's Marvel.
