New Pokémon Snap was revealed over the summer and, while the announcement prompted excitement from fans of the original Nintendo 64 title, Nintendo was fairly quiet about the game’s details. Luckily, the creators have recently opened up, offering more information on the upcoming title. Now included in this deluge is a live-action, ecology-themed commercial geared towards the game's Japanese players.
The unexpected follow-up to the Pokémon-focused photography simulator, has been making headlines over the past month. The company made a surprising move in mid-January by dropping a fresh trailer for New Pokémon Snap which included the game’s official release date. To the delight of many, the game was slated to launch in April, only a few months after the trailer. Listings for New Pokémon Snap began to go up on various retail sites, revealing more information on the game. The previously unknown data included price--New Pokémon Snap will set players back $59.99--and the game's overall download size. Perhaps the most interesting gem players discovered in the new rush of information was found on Nintendo’s website. Following a short description of the game, there is an indication that New Pokémon Snap will support online play in some way.
This latest, and possibly quirkiest, glimpse into New Pokémon Snap can be found on the NintendoEverything YouTube channel. The short, 15-second spot kicks off with an excited child clutching a large camera, decked out for an adventure. The close-up suddenly falls back to reveal the tropical setting, a large – but closed – gate, and a similarly-dressed adult whose wild enthusiasm is something to behold. With an energized fist pump, the video transitions to some gorgeous, in-game footage of those picturesque Pokémon.
The short ad shows off a wide variety of creatures and items from the game in rapid succession. The first shot features a sleeping Dodrio, which may call to mind several instances in the original game when the player could wake sleeping Pokémon for special shots. Next, we see a Torchic happily setting fire to an apple. Anyone familiar with the Nintendo 64 game will remember apple-shaped Pokémon food as one of the first items players can obtain and it looks like the delicacy will be returning to New Pokémon Snap. The pace quickens at this point, showcasing a Pikachu on the beach with an apple, a delighted-seeming Pichu and Grookey, and a Pidgeot speeding towards the camera with a Magikarp in its talons.
While short and quick, this New Pokémon Snap commercial highlights some exciting elements of the game and hints towards possible items and fun Pokémon picture-ops. More news is sure to come out before the game’s release in April, though it may not be as fun to watch as this commercial.
New Pokémon Snap is slated to launch on the Nintendo Switch April 30.
