Team Ninja recently released a trailer showcasing what features players can expect from the upcoming PC release of Nioh 2. Unlike the first Nioh, which saw a simultaneous release on PlayStation 4 and PC in 2017, Nioh 2 has been a PS4 exclusive since it released last March. Since then, the game has cultivated a niche but loyal following among fans of Team Ninja’s unique brand of in-depth and stylized combat. Unlike Team Ninja’s flagship series, Ninja Gaiden, however, Nioh features far more grounded combat mechanics, making it more reminiscent of the popular “Souls-like” genre. This, in conjunction with the game’s difficulty and the necessity of travelling back to where one died in order to retrieve one's experience points, also fuels comparisons to the Souls series.
However, dedicated fans of Nioh 2 will tell you that this is essentially where the similarities end. In fact, the debate over whether Nioh can be classified as a Souls-like is often a point of contention among players. While the basics of combat share similar elements (such as the stamina bar) and boss fights are designed to reward careful play and pattern recognition, Nioh’s combat mechanics are among the deepest ever seen in the hack n’ slash genre. Additionally, the loot system in the Nioh series is far more akin to Diablo, with each piece of gear offering multiple stat bonuses and enhancements that can be tweaked to fit countless playstyles. This combined with the game’s mission-based structure makes for a significantly different overall experience than the Souls series.
The “PC Features Trailer,” found on YouTube, boasts a variety of visual and performance options that will make the PC version of the game a sight to behold. Not only will there be HDR monitor capability, but it will also have options for a consistent 60 or 120 frames per second, mouse and keyboard customization to complement gamepad compatibility, and Ultra-HD/4K compatibility. The PC version will also feature ultra wide-screen support as well as a Steam exclusive “Valve Helmet,” a helmet adorned with LED keys and a valve on the back. It’s difficult to speculate about what this helmet’s stats will be, but it’s sure to be a nice piece of visual flair.
The release of the PC version of Nioh 2 coincides with the release of the Nioh 2 Complete Edition for PS4 as well as the remastered versions of both games and The Nioh Collection on PS5. This flurry of releases, each of which contains all three DLC expansions, is to celebrate the game’s fourth anniversary. While Team Ninja has stated that it currently has no plans to continue working on the Nioh series for now, it appears as though these optimized versions of the game will serve as temporary parting gifts. The Nioh Collection on PS5 in particular will support 4K resolution and up to 120fps for both games, with the ability to transfer players’ save data from their PS4 consoles.
Not much is known about what project Team Ninja plans to tackle next. Considering the noticeable absence of a Ninja Gaiden release throughout the entire previous console generation, many have speculated (or perhaps hopefully wished) that the studio will return to the series on the PS5 and Xbox One X. However, similar to when Nioh was released, it is also possible that there is a completely new project in the making. Whatever Team Ninja's plans, Nioh 2 is clear evidence that the developer still has not lost its touch.
