Paramount celebrated their new film in Cardi B fashion -- with a "WAP" joke. The studio announced that Cardi, real name Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, would lead her first feature film with Assisted Living. The rapper will play Amber, a small-time crook on the run from the law and her former crew. After a heist gone wrong, Amber disguises herself as an elderly woman and hides in the nursing home of her estranged grandmother.
Paramount shared the news on Twitter, celebrating their star with a cheeky reference to her latest hit. The title of the track, "WAP," has become a meme format in its own right, with many social media users joking that the initials stand for less obscene words. Continuing in this tradition, Paramount tweeted:
"We're excited @IAmCardiB 's first lead movie role is WAP = Working At Paramount!"
While Assisted Living will be Cardi’s first leading performance, it won’t be her first film role. She previously had a well-received cameo in Lorene Scafaria’s Hustlers and will appear in the upcoming ninth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise. She’s also no stranger to unscripted television, starring in Netflix’s competition show Hustle & Flow and her series Cardi Tries for Facebook Watch. The Grammy winner initially rose to prominence on the reality series Love & Hip Hop.
Assisted Living was written by Kay Oyegun (This Is Us). Temple Hill and Stephen Love are producing. The film does not yet have a director or release date attached, but with the studio and a big-name star secured, those details are sure to follow soon.
