Ron Swanson is one of the greatest television characters of all time. On Parks and Recreation, Ron was always the standout member of the cast, as his manly love of woodworking and red meat what perfectly mixed with his tough and serious exterior. But as tough as he was, there are some aspects to the man that were a bit sad as well.
Ron was not someone who opened up a lot, but there were a few moments where it was clear he was troubled. From his relationships to his professional life to his losses, even someone like Ron Swanson is capable of having a bit of sadness in his life.
10 Hiding That He Is Duke Silver
Ron is not one to put himself out there in a public way. In fact, he seems to hate the public for the most part. That's why it was so surprising to learn that he was secretly moonlighting as a saxophone player who goes by the name Duke Silver.
The talent Ron shows on the saxophone is also quite a surprise which makes it even sadder that he feels he has to hide that talent. In order to maintain his tough-guy image, Ron keeps this a secret from those around him even though it is clearly a passion of his.
9 Losing Lil' Sebastian
One of the most beloved figures in Pawnee, Indiana is the miniature horse named Lil' Sebastian. The whole town goes crazy for this little animal, including and especially Ron. When he sees Lil' Sebastian in person, he laughs with glee in a way he never has before.
So when Lil' Sebastian eventually dies of old age, Ron is among one of the many mourners. For someone who doesn't like to show emotions often, Ron is unable to hide his grief.
8 Being Scared Of His Birthday
Among the many things Ron keeps to himself is the date of his birthday. He does not like celebrations of any kind and knows Leslie would force one on him if she knew when it was. Unfortunately for Ron, Leslie does manage to learn that secret.
While Leslie does eventually give Ron a thoughtful present which he does enjoy, she also makes him suffer from anxiety the entire day. She could have simply told him what she had planned for him so that he wouldn't be dreading it for hours.
7 Eating Healthy For Stepdaughters
Though it was once hard to imagine Ron taking care of children, he eventually finds himself in a relationship with a single mother and proves himself to be a great father figure. But he also discovers that being a father comes with unexpected responsibilities.
His new partner, Diane, tells him that he needs to start living a healthier life so he can look after his kids. This means doing the one thing he hates most of all – eating fruits and vegetables. Watching him struggle to eat a banana is a hard thing to witness.
6 His Girlfriend Moved To Canada
Ron has had a number of relationships throughout the series, some more successful than others. One romance that seemed to be working quite well was with a woman named Wendy.
It is clear that Ron is developing real feelings for her and that she is getting him to open up more than usual. But eventually, she has to move home to Canada to take care of her parents. For the first time, it seems like Ron is genuinely heartbroken.
5 His Personal Crossroads
The finale of the show takes multiple looks into the future to see where the various characters end up. For Ron, he is the chairman of a successful construction company but decides to walk away from it all when he starts to see his life has no purpose anymore.
He confides in Leslie that he doesn't know what to do with the rest of his life now that his kids are older and his days of working in an office are behind him. Though Leslie, of course, finds him a perfect job, it is still sad to see someone as level-headed as Ron lost in the world.
4 Relationship With Tammy II
Ron has not always had the best of luck with his relationships, and that is especially true of his two failed marriages. When he was married for the second time, his new wife Tammy II proved to be a horrible influence on him.
Though Ron eventually left her, Tammy II still has some bizarre hold on him. Despite Ron's emotional strength, Tammy is able to lure him back and lead him down a destructive path that is very hard to watch.
3 Relationship With Tammy I
As bad as his marriage to Tammy II was, his first marriage to a woman also named Tammy is even more disturbing. Tammy I is not the destructive force of chaos that Tammy I is, but rather controls Ron to make him a submissive and agreeable partner.
Their history together shares some disgusting insight into how unhealthy this relationship is. Tammy was a nurse at the hospital where Ron was born and they started a relationship together when he was just 15 years old. Ron was a victim in the relationship.
2 His Friends Left
Ron likes to keep people at a comfortable distance, but it very apparent that he cares a lot about the people he works with. And though he is not one to show his emotions, it is impossible for Ron to hide the fact that he misses his friends.
When Leslie goes off to work for the federal government, she takes much of the parks and rec team with her. This leaves Ron working with a bunch of new faces and he's not thrilled about it.
1 When Leslie Stood Him Up
During the final season of the show, the time jump reveals that Leslie and Ron are in the midst of a bitter feud. While they both seem to be steadfast in their reasons for being disgruntled, Ron's real reason is much sadder than it seems.
He explains to Leslie that after missing seeing friends at work, he decided to ask Leslie for a job so that he could be back on the team. Due to her hectic life, Leslie accidentally stood Ron up, making him feel more forgotten.
