5 Ways Deadpool Is Similar To The Mask (& 5 Ways It’s Original)

It isn’t just their unique style of dress that makes these irreverent characters similar. The Mask has had a clear influence on the Ryan Reynolds' movies, from the way the lead actors deliver their lines to the way they perform insane, unimaginable, and grotesque attacks on their enemies.

Both characters are very self aware and always break the fourth wall, but there are also ways in which Deadpool completely breaks free of its influences and stands on its own too. Performing amazingly at the box office, and as one of the few movies that smashed the box office on a tiny budget, between the hidden references in the movie and the brilliant action scenes, Deadpool is arguably the spiritual successor of The Mask.

10 Similar: Sense Of Humor

Between the toilet humor and countless sex jokes, The Mask and Deadpool have a very similar sense of humor. Not only that, but they both also have a penchant for making these jokes at the most inconvenient times.

Between pausing a gunfight just to spit out a ridiculous one-liner or making fun of anyone in a position of authority when they’re in trouble, the two superheroes seem to share the same binary code when it comes to comedy.

9 Deadpool Is Original: Making Fun Of The Current State Of The Movie Industry

Though Deadpool loves a fart joke as much as the next guy, one of the biggest selling points of the movie is how the character will inherently criticize the movie industry for its overuse of CGI and its obsession with expanded universes, both of which the movie revels in.

It’s this self-aware humor that sets Deadpool apart from The Mask and it is one of the things that should remain the same when he moves into the MCU. And though the 1995 movie has clearly influenced the Merc with the Mouth, Deadpool has influenced dozens of movies itself with this very kind of self-referential humor.

8 Similar: Anti-Hero

It would be extremely hard to call either characters straight-up heroes, considering the amount of violence and crime they have committed. In The Mask, Stanley robs a bank, antagonizes the police, and literally assaults two mechanics who hadn’t necessarily done anything wrong, which is just one of the ways the movie has aged poorly.

Similarly, Deadpool also ignores laws if he wants to get up to some hijinks, and his murder count is through the roof. However, when it comes down to it, they both do the right thing in the end by saving the day, the world, and the girl.

7 Deadpool Is Original: Easter Eggs & Hidden References

With Deadpool (kind of) being a part of a greater universe, the movie is full of hilarious references to other characters and there are Easter eggs around every corner.

In Deadpool 2, the whole cast of X-Men can be seen hiding from the merc in Xavier’s School for the Gifted. And in the first Deadpool movie, some have even theorized that the final battle between Wade and Francis that takes place on the heli-carrier is actually the one from The Avengers. And, of course, the movie features arguably the best Stan Lee cameo ever.

6 Similar: Breaking All Laws Of Reality

A lot of the stuff that happens in both movies is almost dreamlike, as the heroes do stuff that’s completely unfathomable, but it’s never explained how they do it.

In The Mask, the titular character magically turns a balloon into a machine gun and changes outfits at the snap of his fingers. And in Deadpool, besides being invincible and able to time travel, Wade kills people in the most creative but impossible ways.

5 Deadpool Is Original: More Of An Emphasis On Action And Fight Choreography

In The Mask, Stanley Ipkiss doesn’t even throw so much as a punch, as all of his attacks on his foes are animated and outlandish, but Deadpool features some insane moves.

When Wade forgets his giant bag of artillery, he’s still able to brutally murder his opponents with a slew of punches and dropkicks, and its some of the best looking fight choreography in a movie outside of John Wick.

4 Similar: Actors’ Approach

Jim Carrey was the star child of the 90s, and his unique comedy and physicality are two of the reasons why he was one of the most bankable actors of the decade. It’s what made him perfect to play Stanly Ipkiss, which became one of his best roles.

Ryan Reynolds takes a similar approach to Deadpool just as Carrey did to the Mask, as he’s fast-talking and always moving around. Even if Reynolds isn’t actively channeling Carrey, the Deadpool actor is surely subconsciously influenced by Carrey.

3 Deadpool Is Original: Part Of A Larger Universe

Deadpool is a part of the X-Men universe, and as the character seemingly knows he is just a comic book character, he hasn’t been shy to talk about the confusing timelines and the characters in those movies.

Though we are yet to see Deadpool interact with anybody in the X-Men universe outside of the short cameo from James McAvoy and company in Deadpool 2, it’s bound to happen sooner or later, especially as Deadpool has somehow inadvertently become the series’ most popular character.

2 Similar: Breaking The Fourth Wall

Between criticizing the movie industry and literally speaking to the audience, Deadpool breaks the fourth wall relentlessly, and it’s one of the best ever movies to do so. At one point, he even makes a joke about breaking the fourth wall, mentioning that “that’s like 16 walls.”

The Mask takes breaking the fourth wall to extremes too, most notably when he gets shot in the Cococabana, as he gives an overly dramatic monologue and wins an Oscar for it. But it doesn’t end there, as Stanley then gives a thank you speech, as dozens of silhouettes give him a standing ovation.

1 Deadpool Is Original: Villains

The Mask doesn’t feature any extraordinary villains, as the main antagonist is a two-bit mobster who also wears a mask. But Deadpool and its sequel feature some of the most creative villains of the 2010s.

From Ajax, the scientist who treats Wade like a lab rat, to Cable, who travels through time and is one of the reasons why Deadpool 2 is better than the original, it creates endless possibilities for where the series will go in the future.
