Gilmore Girls: 5 Reasons To Root For Luke And Rachel (& Why Lorelai Is His Soulmate)

It's a perfect love story: a woman walks into a diner and meets the grumpy yet cute owner who ends up being her one true love. While Gilmore Girls is about mother and daughter duo Lorelai and Rory, it also focuses on the romance between Lorelai and Luke Danes.

Luke had a mix of good and bad storylines and he also had a few love interests besides Lorelai. One of his most serious relationships was with photographer Rachel, whom he dated once upon a time. When comparing Rachel and Lorelai, who is best for Luke?

10 Rachel: The Town Felt She And Luke Would End Up Together

Fans might have missed some fun details about Stars Hollow, the small town where Lorelai and her friends lived. Stars Hollow really has it all: mom-and-pop businesses, adorable streets, a gazebo, and a community that cares deeply about one another.

In the season 1 episode "Concert Interruptus," Sookie told Lorelai about Luke's ex-girlfriend Rachel and shared that they were super in love. Sookie also said that she thought that Rachel and Luke would tie the knot, and even Miss Patty said Luke was totally heartbroken when Rachel left. Since the Stars Hollow residents thought they would end up together, that suggests they were truly in love.

9 Lorelai: They Bonded Over Coffee

With so many episodes focusing on Lorelai and Rory, fans definitely know one thing about this duo: they love drinking a lot of coffee every day.

Luke and Lorelai bonded over coffee and it's even the reason why they met, since Luke owned the place where Lorelai preferred to get her caffeine fix. The opening scene of the pilot even featured Lorelai begging Luke for coffee. They had such cute and flirty banter about the hot beverage, and this made them soulmates, as they clearly had a great connection.

8 Rachel: They Had A Long History

When Lorelai and Sookie talked about Rachel in season 1, Sookie said, "The rumor is that Stars Hollow was too small for her. She wanted to live somewhere more exciting." When Lorelai said it seemed like Luke wanted to stay in the small town, Sookie said, "You know Luke. He lived here all his life. He wouldn’t even go away for college. I think we’re going to bury him in that diner."

Because Luke and Rachel shared a long history and tried to make it work a second time, that's one point in their favor. Sometimes it does take another shot to make love last. While Lorelai and Luke got along so well, it's true that Rachel had known him for much longer.

7 Lorelai: They Both Had Quirky Personalities

Rachel was a sweet person and it was definitely cool that she was a photographer. But she didn't feel as dynamic or compelling as Lorelai.

Lorelai and Luke had many sweet episodes focusing on them, and whenever they were chatting, it felt like they had similar quirky personalities. They both became frustrated with the residents of Stars Hollow and didn't want to participate in too much town gossip. They knew what they liked and what they didn't.

6 Rachel: She Came Back, Which Was Romantic

Sure, it wasn't great that Rachel left in the first place, but she did come back because she wanted to try again with Luke.

This is one reason why Rachel and Luke were actually a good couple. She could have forgotten all about him and moved on, but it was clear that she still had feelings for her ex and that she couldn't leave him forever. Luke was definitely intrigued by Rachel showing up again and if he didn't want to be with her, he could have rejected her.

5 Lorelai: She Understood Being A Parent

April Nardini had her moments of being cool, but most Gilmore Girls viewers weren't always happy to see her.

When Luke learned he had a daughter, his universe changed forever, and while he wasn't nice to Lorelai during this time, she did understand the pressures of parenting. That's not something that Rachel could relate to, as it was clear that as a free spirit who wanted to travel, she wasn't looking to settle down and start a family. No matter how good Rachel and Luke seemed at times, he and Lorelai connected more on this level.

4 Rachel: She Pushed Luke Out Of His Comfort Zone

While Lorelai was always bubblier and more outgoing than Luke, it's true that they both lived a steady life that involved creature comforts. They liked the same stores, restaurants, and places that they always had, and they weren't big on making new friends.

Rachel, on the other hand, was always said to love adventure, and for that reason, she pushed Luke out of his comfort zone. She made him envision a life where they could be together, which would have meant not being so set in his ways. While it didn't work out between them, at least Rachel opened Luke's eyes to a new world, as she was a traveling photographer with wanderlust.

3 Lorelai: She Loved Small-Town Life

Lorelai made mistakes regularly and she would never have claimed that she was a flawless person. But no matter what, one thing remained the same about her, and that was her love of Stars Hollow.

Because Lorelai loved small-town life so much, she was Luke's soulmate, and Rachel couldn't compete. Rachel didn't mind the charms of festivals and people who helped each other, but she wanted a bigger life, and Lorelai was happy right where she was.

2 Rachel: She Didn't Try To Change Luke

Lorelai loved Luke so much, and yet it seems like, at times, she wanted him to change who he was.

He was uncomfortable with the idea of getting married while he was still figuring out how to be a dad, and while Lorelai had every right to be upset, that was just how he chose to cope with the situation. She also sometimes wanted him to dress differently and look a bit more formal. Rachel, on the other hand, didn't try to change Luke. She ultimately knew that he wasn't going to move away from Stars Hollow and she knew they couldn't stay together.

1 Lorelai: She Didn't Give Up On Luke

While Lorelai had other potential love interests, she loved Luke the most, and it makes sense that these two characters lived happily ever after.

While Rachel cared about Luke, she did leave him twice, and that's not something that Lorelai would have ever done. Lorelai wanted to be there for him no matter what was going on, and even when he neglected their relationship while he was getting to know April, Lorelai wanted to be a source of support. That's why when Luke was ready, she was waiting for him, and they were able to rekindle their love story.
