Power Rangers' Shared Universe Could Begin With Its Endgame

The Power Rangers franchise is being rebooted with hopes of a shared universe, and it could begin by copying Avengers: Endgame. The Power Rangers have been a big part of pop culture for the last two-plus decades. While most Power Rangers content has come on the small screen, there were two films in the mid-1990s and a Power Rangers reboot in 2017. This gives the IP a lot of history to play with, but so far most of the different iterations of the team have no relation to the other.

The multiverse concept is one that is starting to become more popular as Hollywood studios attempt to create different shared universes. Both the Marvel Cinematic Universe and DC Extended Universe are fully leaning into the possibilities of the multiverse in the coming years. Hasbro and Paramount are currently working to reboot Power Rangers again, and the rumored details on Jonathan Entwistle's plans include a similar multiverse angle. It has been reported that the shared universe he's developing, which will include movies and TV shows, will tie all previous Power Rangers properties together. In doing so, the Power Rangers shared universe can start with its version of Avengers: Endgame.

As the twenty-second film in the MCU and the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, it was Avengers: Endgame that finally brought all the characters from the MCU together. While several never-before-seen team-ups occurred in Avengers: Infinity War, it was only in Avengers: Endgame that they all assembled. The thrill of seeing so many heroes from across the MCU's different franchises onscreen together was something fans were waiting for. And even though the upcoming Power Rangers titles will reboot the franchise, it could also include a moment where multiple versions of Power Rangers from the past all share the screen.

There is even some precedent for the idea of multiple generations of Power Rangers from different universes working together. In 2018, Boom! Studios launched a crossover comic event known as Shattered Grid. The story involves an alternate universe where Tommy Oliver never became a Power Ranger and aligned himself with Rita Repulsa instead. He began traveling the multiverse collecting more power and it all led to an epic clash of Power Rangers from various realities and programs. Shattered Grid was well-received upon its release, and it might not be a coincidence that plans for this shared universe started to develop not too long after.

While neither Hasbro nor Paramount have confirmed a multiverse generational story is in store for the Power Rangers reboot, this could be an excellent way to begin. Instead of waiting years to have such a payoff, Power Rangers can start in a place that immediately puts it in a similar position as other major franchises. This would cater more to longtime fans who will understand the significance of past Rangers all being on the same screen, but even more casual fans could still get on board. The new cast could be featured with members of the 2017 reboot team, the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers team, and several others. And with the different Zords and powers that come with them, it'd also put Power Rangers in a position to have complete freedom to do any type of spinoff or sequel going forward.
