WandaVision Completes Scarlet Witch's Accent Change (Why It's Different)

Marvel's WandaVision brings Scarlet Witch’s accent changes full circle. When she was first introduced in Avengers: Age of Ultron, Wanda Maximoff had a heavy Eastern European accent, courtesy of having grown up in the fictional country of Sokovia. However, it had disappeared completely by Avengers: Infinity War. Since then, Scarlet Witch has spoken with an American accent. However, it’s about to undergo another change in WandaVision, the upcoming Disney+ series starring Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany.

Recent trailers and the first clip from WandaVision reveal Wanda’s accent has once again been altered. This time around, the witch’s accent is a bit more clipped, formal, and arguably somewhat more high pitched. It’s a manner of speaking that is no doubt emulating the mysterious sitcom-style situation Scarlet Witch and Vision find themselves in. In the footage released so far, the leading characters are the vision of a perfect, happy couple. They’ve got the house, each other, and the neighbors seem to adore them. The early days of the couple’s move to Westview are filmed in black and white, and it seems like the new setting has Wanda modeling her enunciation, mannerisms, and demeanor after old sitcoms like I Love Lucy.

Wanda is nothing if not adaptive to her surroundings, as she has to be able to fit in. In an interview from December 2020, Olsen revealed WandaVision would show her character may have grown up in Eastern Europe, but still had access to “American black-market products like television.” This likely (and subconsciously) allows her to better mimic the linguistic style of North Americans.

Perhaps the sitcom stylings explored in WandaVision will explain the kind of TV shows Scarlet Witch and her twin brother Pietro used to watch together. If she grew up watching series such as The Dick Van Dyke Show, then it makes sense Wanda would be able to seamlessly copy what she’s heard before. Plus, if she and Vision are to be an exemplary couple, then it makes sense Wanda's new accent is reflective of the fantastical elements of her happy life.

During Captain America: Civil War, Black Widow began training Scarlet Witch to be a spy. However, the events of the film led her and Vision to go on the run alongside Captain America. While it isn’t touched upon during Avengers: Infinity War, Wanda had to blend in everywhere she went. Perhaps knowing her original accent would give her away to the public, Wanda adapted and began speaking in a standard American accent. This goes a long way to explain why Scarlet Witch can so easily shift between several modes of pronunciation under a variety of conditions. Based on the trailers so far, Vision doesn't sound like he's adapted as well to the sitcom world as Wanda has.

WandaVision will add yet another ability to the long list of things Wanda can do, as it seems altering her accent has become one of her many skills. Depending on what happens to Scarlet Witch afterwards, the Disney+ series might be the final step in Wanda's evolving accent.
