10 Movies To Watch If You Liked Greenland | ScreenRant

Greenland is a disaster/adventure film that does it right, with potent suspense, fierce combat sequences, and dazzling shots of destruction generated with CGI. Gerard Butler heads a strong cast whose acting is on-point, refraining from hampering the cinematic illusion with convincing passion and hysteria.

The 2020 movie also did fairly well in critics' eyes, earning a 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. One could infer that Greenland would've done far better in the box-office if it weren't for public health concerns. However, the movie still did fairly well financially despite having to take the straight-to-streaming-services approach. Here are ten more movies that should appeal to a fan of Greenland.

10 War Of The Worlds (2005)

Stephen Spielberg's sci-fi/action War of the Worlds brings a fleet of gargantuan weapons made with alien technology to the New Jersey/New York area. Tom Cruise stars in the film as the average divorced Dad, who is willing to do anything to protect his two children.

While waves of humans are wiped out, audiences never get an explanation as to who the aliens are or what planet they're from, and there is a scarcity of images of the alien creatures. The blockbuster is loosely based on the story by H. G. Wells.

9 Underwater (2020)

Director William Eubank upped the scale with Underwater compared to his previous directorial project, The Signal (2014), which was only made with $4 million. Underwater, his third directorial project, came with a comparatively massive budget, costing $80 million.

Kristen Stewart stars in this horror/action as Norah Price, one of several survivors trapped in the depths of the ocean after a mysterious calamity. Fans of disaster and alien movies will get a kick out of the movie's plentiful frights and action.

8 Geostorm (2017)

Before Greenland, Butler starred in another disaster movie, Geostorm. The movie takes place in a near-future where technology has allowed humanity to control the climate, a measure taken after a slew of devastating natural disasters.

Unfortunately, the climate-controlling technology begins malfunctioning and natural disasters become more severe, threatening the extinction of humanity. According to Hollywood Reporter, Geostorm was a box-office bomb but Greenland fans should give it a try.

7 Deepwater Horizon (2016)

Based on the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill of 2010, director Peter Berg's action-thriller recounts the decisions, people, and processes that caused the environmental calamity. Mark Whalberg stars as chief electronics technician Mike Williams, who survived the explosion.

Deepwater Horizon is a fantastic historical portrait, accentuated by a star-studded cast including Kurt Russell, John Malkovich, and Kate Hudson. Hollywood Reporter estimates the film lost $60 million, but critics favored the movie and it makes for an exciting watch while honoring the heroism of the survivors.

6 Dinosaur Extinction: Behind The Asteroid Impact Theory (2016)

This documentary is for Greenland fans whose curiosity was sparked by the movie's comet/asteroid theme. Dinosaur Extinction: Behind the Asteroid Impact Theory retraces the cataclysmic event that wiped out the dinosaurs.

Obviously, there are limits to what scientists can decipher about the past, but a gigantic crater found deep in the ocean-floor near Mexico provides astounding evidence and insight into the mass extinction of dinosaurs. If you are fascinated by the Alvarez hypothesis, then this is a must-watch.

5 The Belko Experiment (2016)

The Belko Experiment indeed goes a few levels above of Greenland in terms of violence and blood, but the situation into which its characters are plunged should appeal to any fan of disaster movies. The horror-thriller is set up like a battle-royale when an automated voice comes over the speaker system in a work building, requiring employees to kill multiple co-workers in order to ensure their survival.

The movie's hysteria and chaos should be right up a Greenland fan's alley, although it doesn't impact a viewer's emotional-side to the same extent.

4 The Finest Hours (2016)

Chris Pine stars in this rescue-expedition movie based on true events occurring in 1952. The SS Pendelton was significantly damaged by a massive storm at sea and a four-man crew is given the responsibility of rescuing surviving sailors. The movie boasts a great cast including big names, such as Casey Affleck and Eric Bana.

Not all critics were on board with the Disney-produced adventure. Still, its historical detail and pulse-pounding survival sequences are worth a Greenland fan's consideration.

3 #Alive (2020)

#Alive is a South Korean zombie thriller-drama and director Il Cho's feature-length debut. Audiences enter the apartment buildings of Seoul as a few neighboring individuals remain uninfected by the plague, turning people into the high-speed type of zombie.

Survivors are eventually forced to post to social media in order to connect with emergency services. #Alive is definitely an adrenaline-filled picture, but being a zombie movie, it consists of more gory and gritty sequences than Greenland ever has.

2 The Mountain Between Us (2017)

Idris Elba and Kate Winslet star in this survival tale about two strangers who find themselves stranded in the snowy mountains of Utah with no clear route to salvation. They push each other to survive as they travel through perilous weather and all sorts of adversity, such as an attack by a mountain lion.

The Mountain Between Us wasn't a hit with critics, nor is it a disaster movie. Nevertheless, life-and-death stakes are put to the test, and solid acting keeps the movie afloat.

1 The Crazies (2010)

The 2010 production is a reboot of the 1973 horror movie of the same name. Although critics weren't necessarily in love with director Breck Eisner's modern attempt, the new addition was packed with great performances, enhanced pyrotechnics, makeup, and similar theatrical appeals as well as spine-chilling sequences of terror.

The Crazies is in line with Greenland because of its apocalyptic premise, and like Gerard Butler, Timothy Olyphant is a stellar leading hero. However, the horror/thriller may not be as versatile in terms of applicable age-groups.
