10 Terrible 90s Rom-Coms That Were Way Too Cheesy, Ranked

Who doesn't love curling up to watch a good rom-com? The best of them leave us inspired, delighted, and filled with the starry-eyed notion of true love. Though the 90's produced some truly iconic romantic comedies, some pushed the clichés too far, disappointing even the most diehard fans of the genre.

Filled with drawn-out tropes, corny jokes, and annoying stereotypes these films didn't have viewers reaching for the tissues, but rolling their eyes with embarrassment. While there is plenty of work in the entertainment industry that hasn't aged well, these cheesy films were hardly the heart-fluttering tearjerkers they'd hoped to be.

10 Simply Irresistible (1999)

This ultra-cheesy late 90's film starring scream queen icon Sarah Michelle Gellar went for every hammy cliché possible on its quest for true love. From fairy-godmothers, to a sappy meet-cute, and a magical crab, Simply Irresistible's overall premise goes over the top in attempt to be attention grabbing. While fans of Gellar will get a kick out of her corny lines, this film simply doesn't hit the mark of being a rom-com classic.

9 Lost & Found (1999)

David Spade plays up the funny, nice guy shtick with back-to-back groan inducing goofy one-liners in this cheesy rom-com. Featuring a corny meet-cute, endless dog gags, and an extremely sappy kiss while rising music plays, this take on true love uses too much recycled material from fellow 90's rom-com There's Something About Mary to be authentic. While fans of Spade might giggle at some of his well-timed gags, Lost & Found never quite achieves its goal of being a satisfying love story.

8 She's All That (1999)

She's All That loosely takes the plot of My Fair Lady and updates the ugly-duckling-turned-swan concept into a laughable plot so cheesy it has been repeatedly parodied since its release. Filled with teen stereotypes, this rom-com starring Racheal Leigh Cook and Freddie Prinze Jr. oozes cheesiness with its goofy lines. While the film tries to convince viewers that Laney's makeover is charming, the overdone theme has been criticized for its unrealistic message.

7 Love Stinks (1999)

Bridgette Wilson and French Stewart star as mismatched couple Chelsea and Seth in this zany love-gone-wrong cheesefest. Utilizing every cliché from over the top possessive behavior, to being bride obsessed, and crazy cat lady gags, this rom-com pushes recognizable tropes in attempt to win over audience's hearts.

While Love Stinks has some memorable quotes, "I'll sue your ass for damages for damaging my ass," this 90's film never quite connected with rom-com fans in the way that it hoped to.

6 Till There Was You (1997)

Even though it featured rom-com favorites Jennifer Aniston and Sarah Jessica Parker, this cheesy 90's flick failed to connect as a charming date-night pick. The overall storyline is a simple one, unfortunately the script over complicates itself with a multitude of flash backs and interwoven side-plots. An overwhelming number of clichés from repeated goofy klutz tropes, to heroine stereotypes stops this film from becoming the clever or charming love story it hoped to be.

5 A Smile Like Yours (1997)

Filled with a constant stream of sexual innuendos this cheesy film follows married couple Danny and Jennifer Roberts on their journey to conceive a baby. Despite the likability of the lead stars, the eye-roll inducing fertility clinic jokes including rectal exams and visually expanding sperm-sample jars left much to be desired. Though the notion of a couple trying desperately to conceive is not altogether unrelatable, the wise best friend trope and sexually predatory woman only added to the annoyingly formulaic feel of this silly 90's film.

4 The Beautician And The Beast (1997)

From its recycled title to the plot, this hammy 90's flick takes inspiration from Disney's Beauty and Beast, The King and I, and Sound of Music with predictable results. While fans of The Nanny enjoyed Fran Drescher's Joy Miller, a character similar to her bubbly sitcom persona Fran Fine, critics hardly felt the quirky character was enough to save the cliché storyline that featured uncomfortable cultural stereotypes.

3 My Father The Hero (1994)

Starring a young Katherine Heigl, this film's plot revolves around a young girl who tries to impress an older boy by pretending that her estranged father is her lover. Filled with exaggerated teen angst, klutz tropes, and the typical bumbling over-protective dad, this cheesy rom-com remake of the similarly-titled French film didn't quite connect to American audiences.

While seasoned French actor Gerard Depardieu delivers some well-timed laughs, the premise of Nicole's alleged "sugar daddy" savior was simply too uncomfortable for audiences to make it a charming rom-com hit.

2 Man Trouble (1992)

Despite a strong cast, (Jack Nicholson plays the leading man) the characters of this cliché rom-com play caricatures of cheesy stereotypes. Following a damsel in distress theme, Nicholson's sleazy dog-trainer Harry Bliss attracts the attention of heroine Joan Spruance and pursuits for romance ensue. Widely-panned for its script, ethnic jokes, and heavy innuendo gags this rom-com had more critics gulping than feeling overwrought with passion.

1 Mr. Wrong (1996)

Ellen DeGeneres's Martha follows all the classic rom-com clichés to a T. She's got the meddling parents, the wise best friend, and of course she watches movies home alone with her ice cream wondering when she'll meet Mr. Right. If those weren't enough reasons to leave viewers groaning at this cheesy script, Bill Pullman's Whitman constantly reminds the audience of his insanity with over-the-top gags at Martha's expense after refusing to accept her breaking up with him.
