Dark Horse To Release Mike Mignola Quarantine Sketchbook For Charity

Dark Horse Comics will be releasing Mike Mignola: The Quarantine Sketchbook, which collects Mignola's sketches during his time in lockdown, and the proceeds will be going to charity. Mike Mignola, the creator of Hellboy, began penciling these sketches during the pandemic. He originally auctioned these pieces off online to benefit World Central Kitchen (WCK).

Mignola has worked on Hellboy for over 25 years, took part in the filmmaking process of the franchise, and worked as a Production Designer on Disney's Atlantis: The Lost Empire. His quarantine sketches featured not just his Hellboy character but also a variety of other pop culture characters, including Batman (who he co-wrote in Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham and drew in the Batman/Hellboy/Starman crossover), Dracula (who he also illustrated in a comic book adaptation), and He-Man. The illustrations went viral and were all over the Internet, but Mike Mignola: The Quarantine Sketchbook marks the first time the sketches will be collected in print.

In their official press release, Dark Horse Comics announced that Mignola's sketches were going to be collected into an oversized hardcover and all of the proceeds would be going to World Central Kitchen. Prior to the illustrations, there will be an introduction written by Mignola's wife, Christine Mignola. When talking about the inspiration behind the book, Mignola stated: "I started out doing these sketches just as a way to take my mind off the pandemic, but as they piled up it became clear that we had to do SOMETHING with them. My wife, Christine, suggested donating to World Central Kitchen. Jose Andrés has been doing an amazing job getting food to people in need for a very long time, and now we are very happy to be doing what we can to help him with that."

The WCK was founded in 2010 by Chef José Andrés. This non-profit organization has served over 40 million meals to people affected by natural disasters and other crisis situations around the world. They have been instrumental in delivering over 25 million meals to people in the United States and Spain during the coronavirus pandemic. In response to the sketches, Andrés said, "I love Mike's drawings. We're so grateful for his support and continuous effort this year raising awareness and money for World Central Kitchen."

During these uncertain times, it's really nice to see something comic collectors can enjoy while also giving back. The Mike Mignola: The Quarantine Sketchbook will be available in comic book stores beginning March 3, 2021 for $35.99. This oversized hardcover will be 232 pages long.
