Doctor Who: 10 Major Relationships, Ranked Least To Most Successful

Even though Doctor Who is primarily a sci-fi show about time travel, that's not everything its heroes do. It's true they're busy saving the Earth and countless other worlds from extraterrestrial threats. Despite that, the show has featured a fair share of romantic couples since its renewal back in 2005. It seems like even dangerous aliens can't stand in the way of love.

However, not all romantic relationships in Doctor Who were so amazing. Some were rather brief and soon fell apart. Others were one-sided or had an unhappy ending. Overall, some couples had a more successful relationship than others, but only a few of them got a genuine happily-ever-after.

10 The Least: Donna Noble And Lance Bennett

The main problem with this couple was the Lance hated Donna. He never wanted to marry her and only agreed to the proposal because he had a nefarious plan. Donna, unfortunately, fell for Lance for real. She was sad when he died, despite everything he had done to her and the cruel words he said to her. Luckily for Donna, she got a real wedding later on, with a man who truly wanted to be her husband.

9 The Doctor And Martha Jones

The Tenth Doctor and Martha worked great as friends - but not so much as a potential couple. The Doctor was still pining after Rose, which meant that Martha's affections were largely ignored. Martha realized, in the end, her family needed her more than the Doctor and that she had to get out of the relationship.

She left the TARDIS, built a successful career, and got married to Mickey Smith - all the while remaining friends with the Doctor. So it all worked out well in the end, except not as a romance.

8 The Doctor And Amy Pond

If ranking their friendship, Amy would have ranked higher. However, this is about their romance - sort of. Amy expressed her interest in the Doctor the night before her wedding. She had wedding jitters and had been through a traumatic experience. The Doctor rejected her but not before they shared a few passionate kisses.

Eventually, they moved past the whole deal once Rory soon joined the TARDIS, and together, they created an unforgettable trio. At least the Doctor wasn't mean about Amy kissing him and her initial attraction to him.

7 Rose Tyler And Mickey Smith

Speaking of Mickey Smith, he and Rose are one of the worst actual couples on the show. Rose was never as much into Mickey as he was into her. As fans remember, Rose was bored with her mundane life and wanted to try something new. When she got the opportunity, she would leave with the Doctor without letting Mickey know when she would be back. As a result, people began to suspect that Mickey had something to do with her disappearances.

Once Rose did come back, things didn't change for the better. She wasn't happy about Mickey traveling in the TARDIS, so it was for the best they called it quits in the end and moved to friendship instead.

6 Clara Oswald And Danny Pink

Nothing lasts forever. Clara learned this lesson the hard way. Despite the dangers they faced, Danny didn't die because of hostile aliens. A car hit him. Clara was devastated since the two were very much in love.

However, that's not to say their romance was perfect - it did have a rough start, especially as Clara had been lying to Danny about her travels with the Doctor. But once Danny learned the truth, they eventually sorted through their issues and made it work. One has to wonder whether they would have stayed together if Danny hadn't died.

5 The Doctor And River Song

It's difficult to build a functioning relationship with someone when they live their lives out of sync. Time travel can complicate things. Not to mention that River tried to kill the Doctor. And then she died to save his life.

But in the meantime, they were happy whenever they were together and the Doctor missed River after her death. They had similar characters, a thirst for adventures, and were both highly intelligent.

4 The Doctor And Rose Tyler

Technically, the Doctor and Rose didn't get their happily ever after - except they did. Once the Doctor left Rose behind in the end, he moved on. Rose also did the same, forming a relationship with the Meta Doctor, who looked like the Tenth but was now human.

The last time they appeared on the show together, they shared a passionate kiss, and the human Doctor presumably confessed his love for Rose. It's unclear what happened to them since then but they have a strong chance of making it work.

3 Madame Vastra And Jenny Flint

Unlike some other couples on the show, there's no big drama going on in this relationship. It's true that Vastra and Jenny faced many obstacles on their way to happiness. Their families weren't thrilled about the relationship and they have to pretend Jenny works for Vastra in front of strangers. However, other than that, the two women seem happy together, they complement each other well, and they fight side by side.

2 Jackie Tyler And Pete Tyler

This couple is the ultimate proof that in the world of Doctor Who, love sometimes overcomes death. Jackie lost her husband to a car accident when Rose was just a little girl. She tried dating but never found anyone else.

Pete Tyler from another Earth lost his wife Jackie during a Cybermen attack. When Jackie and Pete met, they hit it off fast, got together, and even had a son. All in all, their ending felt like a deserved one.

1 The Most: Amy Pond And Rory Williams

Amy and Rory knew each other since they were kids. They grew up side by side and were friends for a long time before they got together. Their relationship had a strong base, and they were made for each other.

While it did look like the couple were about to Amy break up for good once she found out she wasn't able to have children, the two did reconcile once the Doctor forced them to talk to each other. In the end, when Amy had to choose between traveling with the Doctor or let the Weeping Angel send her back in time to Rory, she chose the latter. Amy and Rory never separated and lived together until they died, going on to adopt a son. While fans were heartbroken by their deaths, they did find comfort in this ending.
