Iron Man Just Revealed He Needs His Suit to Live | Screen Rant

Warning! This article contains spoilers for Iron Man #6

For many years following his origin, Tony Stark was required to wear his Iron Man armor chest plate at all times, in order to prevent shrapnel from reaching his heart. The latest issue of his newly-relaunched series takes that concept one step further. As of now, if Tony even takes off his helmet, he’ll die.

Recent issues of the relaunched Iron Man series by Christopher Cantwell and Cafu have focused on Tony’s journey to prove—both to himself and the world around him—that he’s worthy of possessing the vast power and privilege which has defined his life and career as the armored Avenger. In the most recent issue, in the wake of a brutal attack perpetrated by classic Avengers foe Korvac, it’s become increasingly clear that Tony’s desire to secure his heroic legacy has all but consumed him entirely, and he’s willing to sacrifice his own life to fuel his ego.

After their last confrontation with Korvac resulted in a massive explosion, Iron Man and Hellcat are left reeling. Hellcat’s mind is in pieces, and she’s experiencing hallucinatory visions of Korvac’s plans for rewriting the universe. Tony is gravely injured and realizes that the only thing keeping his broken neck in place is his armor. Tony decides that going to a hospital is not an option and instead opts for an independent treatment at his base of operations.

With the help of Misty Knight and his new ally, Halcyon, Tony’s armor is altered and reinforced enough to stabilize his spinal injury. “I can’t take the armor off until I’m ready to be prepped for emergency surgery. That’s not happening anytime soon,” Tony reveals in a caption box. With limited mobility and a serious weakness that can be easily exploited by his foes, Tony decides he’s going to take the fight directly to Korvac, against the better judgment of his new teammates. Either Tony truly believes that his armor makes him invincible, or he’s content to sacrifice himself as a martyr to protect his legacy.

Since issue #1 of Christopher Cantwell and Cafu’s Iron Man run, Tony has struggled with a rapidly waning public reputation and the personal cost of his vast wealth and influence. With his back to the wall and his head filled with self-doubt, it seems as though Tony has doubled down on his arrogance and self-adulation. He’s acting recklessly with little regard for the safety of himself or those around him. And in contrast to Korvac, who is proving that he’s steps ahead of Tony at all times, Iron Man is walking into his next battle with the odds significantly stacked against him.
