A revival of Square Enix's Mana series is going strong, as Legend of Mana is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PC later this year. The Mana series laid dormant for years, but its old games have been reworked for modern systems.
The first three games in the Mana series (including Secret of Mana) were ported to the Nintendo Switch as part of the Collection of Mana in 2019. This was notable for having the first English version of Seiken Densetsu 3, which was localized as Trials of Mana. The collection also included Final Fantasy Adventure, as that was localized outside of Japan under the Final Fantasy name. It wasn't long until Square Enix released a full 3D remake of Trials of Mana with new content, bringing it a wider audience than ever before.
The most recent Nintendo Direct included an announcement for the latest remaster in the Mana series. Square Enix has confirmed that an HD remaster of Legends of Mana is coming to Nintendo Switch on June 24. The company later confirmed that the game is also coming to PC and PS4 on the same day. A trailer for the game was also uploaded to the official Square Enix YouTube channel.
Legend of Mana is an action RPG that was released for the original PlayStation in '99. The game is similar to the Final Fantasy Tactics Advance games, in that the player builds the world piece by piece, creating their own world map. The game featured a ton of side content and the player had lots of different items to build and collect. The new version of Legend of Mana features HD visuals, a rearranged soundtrack, and the cut Ring Ring Land minigame, which didn't make it into the international ports of the original game, due to the PocketStation accessory not being released outside of Japan. The people who order Legend of Mana before July 23 will receive a free custom theme on PS4 or a Legend of Mana wallpaper on PC.
It's great to see Square Enix bringing more of its classic titles to modern systems, especially as Saga Frontier: Remastered is also on the way. Legend of Mana was pretty different from the other games in the Mana series, and it will be interesting to see if it still stacks up after all of these years.
Legend of Mana will be released for Nintendo Switch, PC, and PS4 on June 24.
