Marvel's MODOK Trailer Reveals Show's May Release Date

The official trailer for Marvel’s upcoming M.O.D.O.K. show has arrived, revealing a May release date for the animated comedy on Hulu. The new series, which is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, was created by Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt, with Oswalt also providing the voice for M.O.D.O.K. The cast also includes Aimee Garcia, Ben Schwartz, Melissa Fumero, Wendi McLendon-Covey, and Beck Bennett.

In the Marvel comics, M.O.D.O.K. (Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing) is a major supervillain, primarily associated with the evil organization A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics). Since his debut in 1967, M.O.D.O.K. has served as an antagonist to numerous Marvel heroes, including the Avengers and the X-Men. The new series from Hulu puts a comedic twist on the classic character, who experiences a midlife crisis while trying to balance his villainous deeds with his suburban family life.

A new trailer for the upcoming animated M.O.D.O.K. series has been officially released by Hulu, and it gives fans of the character a glimpse at his latest rendition and the various comical challenges that await him. The trailer also confirms that the series will premiere on May 21. Throughout the trailer, M.O.D.O.K. struggles with incompetent henchmen, financial woes, and opposing, theoretically heroic forces. M.O.D.O.K.’s family isn’t shown in the trailer, though they have appeared in past promotional footage. Watch the new M.O.D.O.K. trailer below.

The series is a notable departure from Marvel’s recent TV and film outings in several ways. For starters, it has no connection to Phase 4 of the MCU, embracing an entirely different style both visually and tonally. Adult animation itself is relatively new ground in the modern era of Marvel, though it looks like a good fit so far, as it allows the creators to play fast and loose with one of Marvel’s most beloved and ridiculous characters. With luck, the show itself will fully deliver on that potential.

M.O.D.O.K.’s placement on Hulu, rather than Disney+, seems fitting given the show’s divergences from the MCU. Hulu makes more sense as a home for the series’ adult content, and the separation helps clarify its role in the broader scope of Marvel TV and films. It’s possible that M.O.D.O.K. could be a model of sorts for future Marvel content that doesn’t fit into the overall style and target demographics of the MCU, allowing more fringe comic characters and stories to make their way to the screen. M.O.D.O.K. premieres on Hulu on May 21.
