Riverdale: The 10 Saddest Things About Archie | ScreenRant

Archie Andrews is arguably one of the most cartoonish characters on Riverdale—a show adapted from a comic book. Archie bounced from girl to girl and fad to fad, never knowing what he wanted to do and always making the wrong choices. And even though it was difficult to identify with him at times, Archie has some of the saddest storylines.

Although he didn’t fake his death and his father wasn’t a serial killer like Betty's, Archie tends to be the most tragic character in Riverdale.

10 Abused By Miss Grundy

All-American boy Archie Andrews blossomed over the summer after freshman year. This included catching the eye of his music teacher Miss Grundy; whose Riverdale adaptation is disparate from the source material. Their relationship quickly turned sexual, and Archie let himself fall hard and fast and did not consider the fact that Miss Grundy was taking advantage of him.

When their relationship was discovered, Miss Grundy tried to manipulate him into saving her for selfish reasons. Miss Grundy was unequivocally a predator and Archie has to live with the fact that his first amorous experience was abusive.

9 Struggling With PTSD

Archie dealt with a lot of trauma in his life. In a town where murder is normal, Archie had to deal with being a teenager and watching his father being shot by the Black Hood. This was one of the first times he experienced violence firsthand. From then on, he took it upon himself to protect the town. This was only the beginning of Archie dealing with concepts he was not mature enough to handle.

8 Framed For Murder

Dating and high school is hard enough. It’s even harder when someone's girlfriend’s dad has it out for them. At first, Archie tried to get in good with Hiram Lodge; Hiram accepted him into the fold of illicit criminal activity. But soon Archie couldn’t keep up and his relationship with Hiram turned hostile.

While at Hiram’s lake house, the four kids were attacked by some townies. Luckily, Hiram’s capo was there to stop the intruders. Hiram eventually framed Archie for the murder his capo committed. At seventeen, Archie was thrown in jail.

7 Veronica Couldn’t Love Him

Archie and Veronica always gave into their passions for each other and for the most part, tried to take Betty’s feelings into account. Once Betty started dating Jughead, Archie was fair game.

He and Veronica dated seriously, but when Archie confessed his love for her, Veronica couldn’t bring herself to return the feelings. After watching her parents’ marriage dissolve, love was not something that Veronica considered. Though she eventually returned the affection, Archie struggled with what it was like not to be loved.

6 Hopeless Romantic

For the most part, romanticism is not a bad thing. Archie takes it to the next level. When he’s not with Veronica, he bounced from Val to Josie to the random farm girl he encountered after he escaped jail.

This aspect of his character always gets him into trouble. Archie doesn’t know what it's like to be on his own. When he is in a relationship, he is usually committed. He always follows his heart, no matter where it takes him or who it hurts.

5 Never Understood Betty

The courtship of Archie and Betty was doomed before it had begun. Betty had always idealized Archie and Archie could never bring himself to commit to Betty. Only after they were both in relationships with other people did Archie realize his feelings for her. But there was always something about Betty the was out of his reach.

On top of being The Black Hood’s daughter, Betty was entrenched in darkness that Archie could never understand. She shared Jughead's fascination with solving Riverdale's sordid mysteries, among other things. Though Archie may have had feelings for her, there is a part of Betty that he could never fully get on board with.

4 Saved Jughead’s Life

Full of convoluted storylines, season four was famous for the faking of Jughead’s death. Archie and Veronica found Betty in the woods with a rock in her hand and assumed she had used it against Jughead.

Archie performed chest compressions, helping save his best friend's life. Jughead is one of the most important people to Archie and his loss would have been devastating. Archie was relieved when Jughead regained consciousness, but he still had to go along with Betty’s plan to fake Jughead’s death and leave his fate in the hands of a random FBI medic.

3 Helped Jughead Run Drugs

After Jughead joined the Southside Serpents, he had to make sacrifices. This included employing the services of Penny Peabody, who swore that she would help FP while he was in prison. Because she did this, Jughead owed her a favor.

Jughead couldn’t watch his father suffer in jail and was roped into running drugs for Penny. Archie couldn’t support the act but had to support his best friend. Jughead needed Fred’s truck and Archie was the only person he could turn to.

2 Fred’s Death

The loss of Fred Andrews was one of the most devastating moments of not just Archie’s life, but of the show itself. Fred was arguably one of the only good parents and Archie always depended on his father to dispense sage wisdom. Losing him caused Archie to go into a tailspin.

Archie’s motivations for the entire season center around what his father would want. Archie struggles to do what is right, still trying to please Fred and cope with his loss.

1 Can’t Figure Out What He’s Supposed To Do

From season to season, Archie always changes his mind. He went from making music to boxing, to the community center. He never showed particular promise in any one activity.

Archie was unable to graduate high school because of his stint in jail. Instead of doing the work, Archie let the pressure get the better of him. His friends graduated high school and Archie enlisted in the army, even though it wasn’t what was best for him. His lack of self-actualization caused a rift between him and his friends, driving everyone apart.
