Step Up Show Casts Christina Milian To Replace Naya Rivera

Christina Milian will succeed the late Naya Rivera as Collette in Step Up season 3. Based on Duane Adler's cult-favorite romantic dance film franchise, the Step Up TV series (initially called Step Up: High Water) premiered on YouTube's premium subscription service in 2018 before switching over to Starz for season 3. Up until the show's sophomore run, Step Up featured Rivera as Collette Jones, the High Water Performing Arts School principal and co-founder. But on July 8, 2020, Rivera passed away in a tragic drowning accident at Lake Peru. After her passing, production on the third season immediately paused, and it was later announced the show would resume filming on a 'reworked' season 3 in January 2021.

Now TV Line reports that after careful consideration, the Step Up makers have cast actress-singer Christina Milan to replace Rivera as Collette in season 3. Several factors prompted the showrunners to recast Rivera's part, including the significance of her role in the upcoming storyline. The makers made sure to approach the recast appropriately. Therefore, before bringing Milian on board, they sought Rivera's family's permission, who gave their blessings to find a new actress to play Collette. Milan is aware of her new part's gravity, and she hopes to honor Rivera's legacy by giving her best on the show.

“I am so excited to join the Step Up family. I know I have massive shoes to fill. Naya was incredible. I hope to honor Naya, her family, friends, and fans with a great performance.”

Naya's death is a terrible loss. The graceful and loving Glee actress had played Collette to perfection in Step Up. Her sudden passing has created a void in the show and its fan community. Rivera's shoes are too big for anyone to fill. Yet the showrunners and Milian are doing their best to bring Step Up back on track. Milian is a fantastic performer who can display a wide range of emotions. And while mourning fans might need to adjust to her as Collette, she is willing to give her all to the show.
