The Bachelor: Catalina Morales Is More Than Just A Pageant Girl

Last week’s surprise addition to The Bachelor cast didn’t go over very well with the rest of the women, but fans are eager to know more about the late-entry contestants. Catalina Morales is so far best known as the pageant girl in Victoria Larson’s crosshairs, but there’s more to her than meets the eye.

Fans were flabbergasted when five new contestants joined the cast last week, but the women in the house had an even stronger reaction. Some of the new women clicked with the Bachelor right away, but others weren’t so lucky at winning Matt’s heart. Catalina made it through her first rose ceremony, and now has to contend with the fury of her fellow castmates. The former Miss Universe Puerto Rico has her work cut out for her trying to forge a connection with Matt, but Catalina has much more to offer than just pageant experience.

Catalina’s cast biography from ABC is fairly standard – it mentions her 2015 pageant win, a love of dance, and passion for family. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to Catalina. In addition to her time in the pageant world, Catalina is also highly educated, with a Bachelor’s degree in communications and a law degree from the University of Puerto Rico Law School. Catalina is licensed to practice law in Puerto Rico, Florida, and New York. For the past year, she has been working as Managing Attorney in her own law practice called CM Legal Office in New York City. As if her resumé wasn’t impressive enough already, Catalina also worked as a TV presenter for Wapa Televisión, a leading television station in Puerto Rico. She is also a published author, and reportedly wrote a book inspired by her father’s terminal lung cancer (via LA Times). Given her exceptional accomplishments, it’s surprising ABC didn’t mention them. When it comes to introducing and describing contestants, it’s all too easy to pigeonhole women into a particular type or role. The franchise has featured pageant girls before, including former Bachelorette Hannah Brown, so it would seem the show is trying to fit Catalina into that category. But why should she be pegged as a pageant girl given her other notable achievements? Past Bachelorettes Andi Dorfman and Rachel Lindsay were both lawyers, and the show leaned into their professional accomplishments. Perhaps production feels they need to play up her pageant past to position her as a foil to Victoria.

Hopefully, Catalina will stick around long enough for fans to learn about the other sides to her. It goes to show that the contestants on The Bachelor are actual human beings with full and complex lives, rather than just characters on a TV show.
