A new episode of 90 Day Fiancé season eight means Andrew Kenton finding a new way to disappoint Amira Lollysa and fans alike. After a failed Mexico plan, and Amira’s countless requests to get a visa extension, Andrew still insisted on sending her to Serbia. The French-Egyptian woman, not wanting to disappoint her future husband, dismissed her father’s pleas and COVID-19 warnings to go to the country. However, immediately upon starting her quarantine, Amira dealt with the 2020 Serbian protests. Here’s what the protests were all about during Amira’s stay in Belgrade.
It’s out of the frying pan and into the fire for Amira on 90 Day Fiancé, as she struggles to please Andrew while also fighting not to resent him. Fans have been wondering what Amira sees in the daycare dude, who repeatedly asked her to bend over backward while following his plans. This week was a whole new set of complications for Amira, who struggled to find food in Serbia and claimed Andrew was not even calling her. But when the TLC couple did get on a video chat, Andrew broached the subject of having children, as he developed baby fever after his sister became pregnant. However, amidst 90 Day Fiancé fans celebrating that Amira may not have gotten on the plane to America after all, many wondered about her safety amidst the ongoing Serbia riots.
While episode 14 didn’t explore the status of what was happening in Serbia, news sites such as BBC reported that protests and riots had begun in the capital, Belgrade, on July 7, 2020. Amidst a surge of growing coronavirus cases, the government decided to impose a lockdown. This move was opposed by many Serbians, especially because many believed President Alexander Vucic had mismanaged the pandemic. By July, cases were surging and the government decided to impose another lockdown. To oppose this decision, protests were organized in many places, with the main one located outside the Parliament building in Belgrade.
Over the next two days, both the police and paramilitary soldiers were called in to control the situation, but this just led to further clashes. Over the next seven days, there were many peaceful as well as violent protests held all across Serbia. When videos of police brutality and mass arrests started to hit the Internet, many citizens decided it was best to stay in. The rising tensions also meant tourists and visitors were stuck at their homes and hotels. Although the situation diffused in a week, many small protests continued till as late as December 2020. Even though the situation improved a bit, there was a seeming cloud of fear all through the latter half of the year.
Saumur resident Amira reached Serbia in July 2020, where she had to quarantine for 14 days while also filming her own scenes for 90 Day Fiancé. With just 18 days left for her K-1 visa to expire, Amira complained she had trouble sleeping because of the police sirens during the riots and said it was “really scary.” With room service not available, Amira claimed she was “scared to death” every time she had to step out to get food. In episode 14, Andrew was seen crying about his 90 Day Fiancé partner not getting onto her plane. While some fans cheered for Amira to have finally dumped Andrew, some others were worried for her safety. However, Amira was shown fine and waiting at the airport in the previews for next week's episode. While Amira may have experienced a nightmare in Belgrave, Andrew is now the one who's afraid that his partner might not make it to America.
