The Falcon and the Winter Soldier star Georges St-Pierre hints the fan theories for the Marvel show could be even bigger than WandaVision's. Though the MCU's Phase 4 got off to a late start due to the coronavirus pandemic, it's really kicking into high gear now. WandaVision just completed its nine-episode run last weekend, and after taking this week off, Marvel will be back on Disney+ with The Falcon and the Winter Soldier on March 19. That series will follow Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) and Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan) as they navigate a new, post-Avengers: Endgame world.
If WandaVision is to be remembered by anything, it just might be the frenzied fan theories it inspired. Since the series kept so many things a secret throughout its first few episodes, from its true villain to the nature of Vision's (Paul Bettany) return, fans were left to form their own guesses. With each passing week, the theories got more and more intense, with some even believing a major Marvel character (either Magneto or Reed Richards) would appear. WandaVision ultimately sidestepped all of those wild hypotheses, leaving some divisive responses behind.
There's a chance that might not change heading into The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. St-Pierre, who returns to the MCU for the first time since Captain America: The Winter Soldier as Georges Batroc, recently sat down with Complex for their Load Management podcast. When asked if he believes The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will inspire the same rabid fan theories as WandaVision, St-Pierre said, “It could be even bigger. It’s huge. They put so much budget into this thing it’s incredible.” Sadly, though, he couldn't provide any further teases, adding, “I only know what I needed to know. I don’t know the whole story, to tell you the truth. And even if I wanted to tell you stuff, I couldn’t. They’re very good at hiding stuff.”
The intense reaction to WandaVision had both its good and bad sides. On one hand, it was fun for fans to gather online and share their new theories every week as they watched and rewatched each episode. On the other, some could argue all that emphasis on the theories took away from what WandaVision was: A deep dive into one of the MCU's most powerful characters. It seemed likely that The Falcon and the Winter Soldier could avoid this fate simply by appearing more straightforward than the previous series, but based on St-Pierre's assessment, that might not be the case.
Of course, it will be easier to gauge how The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will pan out when it premieres next week. When it comes to something as big as the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it can be easy to fixate on the thrilling things to come. However, it's also worthwhile to sit back and enjoy the ride. There will be more wild twists and developments in the future, but not everything needs to happen on a massive scale. Hopefully, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier will be its own thing and avoid the pressures of setting up the rest of the MCU.
