God of War Studio Staffing Up for New Unannounced Project

SIE Santa Monica Studio, the Sony-owned group behind God of War, is currently recruiting for a new lead writer to join development on an unannounced project. Interestingly, this doesn't count as the first evidence that Santa Monica Studio has started work on something new. Earlier this year, the crew publicly shared job listings for an Art Director that would join the production of a "new unannounced title." Details were scarce at the time and have remained so in the many weeks since then.

Of course, the studio's other project is the sequel to 2018's God of War - a game that also lacks an official title, though most fans and media outlets have taken to calling it God of War: Ragnarok. Sony unveiled the new entry in late 2020 during a State of Play broadcast, teasing eager fans with a 2021 launch window. Such a release now seems unlikely, however. Mid-March is upon us and Santa Monica Studio has yet to showcase gameplay or even pre-rendered footage. And word from God of War 2018's creative director, Cory Barlog, indicates the eagerly-anticipated sequel isn't ready for primetime just yet. At the very least, fans can begin speculating about the group's other mystery game.

A recent post from Santa Monica Studio's official Twitter account noted the developer is presently hiring for a lead writer. Akin to the previous job posting, this latest listing (via Greenhouse) states the role will be for "the development of a new unannounced title." The application also asks that candidates possess a "mastery of storytelling, and deeply understands the marriage between gameplay and narrative." Further details are presently unknown at this time.

Since the new God of War installment is next up to bat, and remains shrouded in mystery, reason suggests Santa Monica Studio won't share details about the unannounced title anytime soon. Yet, this posting's emphasis on the significance of storytelling implies the studio has another narrative-centric adventure up its sleeve.

Apart from assisting external development teams with Sony's XDev initiative, much of Santa Monica Studio's focus over the last 15-plus years has revolved around God of War. Several years ago, however, the firm did have a sci-fi game in production helmed by Stig Asmussen, creative director behind 2019's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Whether or not the group would consider revisiting previously cast aside endeavors is anyone's guess.
