According to Variety, Annie Murphy has joined the cast of Russian Doll's second season. The 34-year-old actress began her career doing bit parts in Canadian TV dramas before she broke out in a big way with her Emmy-winning turn as Alexis Rose on CBC's Schitt's Creek. Her role in Russian Doll is unknown at this time.
Praised for imbuing her comedic performances with emotional honesty and self-awareness, Murphy has become a buzzy name this pilot season. The news of Murphy's Russian Doll casting comes on the heels of the first trailer for another meta dramedy that she'll star in, called Kevin Can F**k Himself. With a premise partially inspired by a similarly-titled Kevin James-led sitcom that controversially killed off James' TV wife, Kevin Can F**k Himself appears to dissect the damaging tropes that surround wives and mothers in traditional American sitcoms. Created by Valerie Armstrong and executive produced by Rashida Jones and Will McCormack, the AMC show will let fans of Murphy see what the rising star can do as a series lead when it's released this summer.
As for Russian Doll, scant details are known about its second season and how Murphy might fit into the storyline. Given the show's complex premise and the somewhat perplexing end to its first season, it's difficult to predict where a sequel season might go. The best clue so far comes from Chloë Sevigny, who played Nadia's unstable mother, Lenora, in the first season's frequent flashbacks. In a recent interview with UK media magazine Digital Spy, Sevigny implied that her character is an even more substantial figure in season 2. If the show indeed spends more time delving into the troubled Vulvokov family, Murphy could serve as a cousin or other similarly-aged relative of Nadia's who could act as a foil or friend to the troubled protagonist. No matter how Murphy ends up appearing on the show, Russian Doll devotees now have yet another reason to anticipate what will almost certainly be a stellar new season of Netflix's thought-provoking dramedy.
