Space Jam 2 Features Cameos From Other WB Franchises

Space Jam 2 sees LeBron James visiting other Warner Bros. movies confirms the director. Over two decades after the original became a feature film vehicle for the legendary hoops hero Michael Jordan, Lakers star James takes over the movie property combining basketball action with the Looney Tunes.

The original Space Jam was of course a big hit with $230 million taken at the box office and remains a film that a lot of people love (and its old school 1996 website famously is still on the internet in unaltered form for some reason). Obviously things have changed a lot since the first movie debuted, so it’s no surprise that Space Jam: A New Legacy (as it's officially known) is also changing things up. For instance, the alien Monstars from the first movie are not featured in the sequel (though different alien protagonists do figure in). The new film also takes more of a family angle on things, as James recently teased, rather than focusing only on basketball and Looney Tunes antics.

Another big addition to the new movie is a nostalgia angle that promises to be a lot of fun for fans of Warner Bros. properties beyond Space Jam. As revealed by the movie’s director Malcolm D. Lee, the sequel’s plot involves James being sucked into Warner Bros.' servers and finding himself visiting other works from the studio’s history. Lee enthused to EW"It was a tricky thing just in terms of what you may want, like, 'Oh my God, look, there's Mad Max, and there's Casablanca!'" In addition to finding himself dropped into the worlds of other Warner Bros. movies, James also encounters WB characters as spectators at the movie’s climactic basketball game.

It’s not yet been confirmed what exact Warner Bros. titles are featured in the tour of the studio’s servers, but in addition to the ones mentioned by Lee as possibilities, The Matrix and Wonder Woman were also previously teased by James in connection to his movie. Of course, the biggest Warner Bros. nostalgia element in Space Jam 2 is the Looney Tunes themselves, as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety Bird and the rest of the gang have all become iconic characters.

Indeed the Space Jam franchise is itself very nostalgic for fans of NBA basketball and 1990s Hollywood movies. It of course remains to be seen how fans of the original movie react to the new film with its many changes large and small. There’s bound to be a big Space Jam vs. Space Jam 2 debate among fans, just as there’s already a massive fight between basketball junkies over whether Jordan or James should be considered the greatest player of all time. Space Jam 2 may help James surpass Jordan as the GOAT when it comes to basketball movies, but if he pulls it off, it sounds like he’ll have a lot of help from more than just the Looney Tunes. Mad Max or Rick Blaine from Casablanca popping up in the world of Space Jam 2 to get dunked on by James sounds like a definite hoot.
