Vanishing At Cecil Hotel: Elisa Lam Ghost Theory Explained

Netflix's Crime Scene: The Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel presents multiple conspiracy theories behind the death of Elisa Lam, but could dark spirits have really been involved as the Ghost Adventures crew believe? In the three-week span that Elisa was missing, conspiracy theories surrounding her disappearance dominated the internet. When her body was eventually found in a water tank on the hotel's roof, it was ultimately ruled an accidental drowning, possibly caused by Elisa's bipolar disorder; however, some reject this explanation and instead blame the paranormal for Elisa's tragic fate.

To put this theory to the test, the TV show Ghost Adventures decided to investigate the infamous Cecil Hotel for themselves. The Cecil has long had a haunted history. Murder, suicide, and crime have been abundant throughout its 90-year history; it's even hosted two serial killers during their active years and one of those killers, Richard Ramirez, famously practiced devil worship. The Cecil is so infamous it even inspired a season of American Horror Story. Its ghostly reputation only skyrocketed following Elisa's death - those invested in the case (or those just looking for a thrill) would seek out her old room to see if they could connect with her spirit. For the first - and only - time, the Cecil allowed the Ghost Adventures crew to investigate the hotel on camera.

The Ghost Adventures crew firmly believes dark entities reside within the hotel and do not rule out paranormal involvement in Elisa's death, though a former manager has come out [via Esquire] to state she does not believe the Cecil is haunted. On top of its reputation, there are two components to Elisa Lam's case that makes conspiracy theorists think the paranormal might be involved. The inaccessibility of the roof to guests and contention surrounding whether the water tank hatch was closed have some convinced that someone - or something - was on the roof with her that night. Michael Parry, a medium brought in to investigate by Ghost Adventures, says he believes someone led Elisa to the roof because they knew to hide her there and that her attacker was "not in a physical body."

Another piece that fuels the paranormal flames is the last known footage of Elisa in the Cecil Hotel elevator. Her strange behavior led to speculation Elisa was playing the elevator game, a Korean urban legend said to open doorways to other dimensions and conjure spirits. Zak Bagans of Ghost Adventures decided to investigate the legend for himself, playing the game in the very elevator Elisa was last seen in. This resulted in unexplained technical malfunctions and cold breezes, which Bagans believes might have been a spirit joining him on the elevator.

Throughout the two-night investigation, the crew also captured an electronic voice phenomenon (EVP) of Elisa's full name in her room, photo evidence of apparitions, and responses on a device called the Paranormal Puck that says she was killed by a "being," and is still linked to the Cecil Hotel. While Crime Scene: Vanishing at the Cecil Hotel explored the details behind the official story, there is seemingly an Elisa Lam theory for every conspiracy theorist who feels the official story isn't the whole story.
