WandaVision Theory: How The Twins Survived (& How It Links To Doctor Strange 2)

WandaVision's finale sees Scarlet Witch's twins disappear, but here's how Billy and Tommy might still be alive in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and could return in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Wanda Maximoff gave birth to her twin sons inside the Hex early on in WandaVision. The second half of the season showed them grow up and gain abilities, which teased how they can become the Young Avengers heroes known as Wiccan and Speed. However, due to the fake reality nature of Westview, it was not clear if the twins would get the chance to see that comic future play out.

The WandaVision finale confirmed that this isn't possible. After battling Agatha Harkness, Wanda disabled the powerful barrier surrounding Westview that her Chaos Magic abilities created. This was the ultimate sacrificial act for Scarlet Witch, though, as it meant saying goodbye to her entire family. She and Vision tucked Billy and Tommy into bed one last time before the fake reality disappeared, and Wanda then had to say goodbye to Vision once more. This ending could've closed the door on Billy and Tommy being part of the MCU - especially since their souls weren't linked to Mephisto as they were in the comics at first. But, Scarlet Witch's twins might still be alive after all.

With the MCU clearly building towards the Young Avengers in Phase 4, it isn't a question of if Scarlet Witch's twins will be back but instead how and when it will happen. WandaVision leaves the door open for Marvel Studios to steer the story in several different directions. Fans currently have to wait and see what path is chosen to bring Billy and Tommy back to the MCU. But the answer to how the twins return could come in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, with some of the popular villain suggestions for the movie potentially being tied to their current state.

The post-credits scene for WandaVision showed Wanda living in a remote cabin and studying her magic abilities. While she is in her astral form reading the Darkhold, Wanda hears the familiar voices of Billy and Tommy asking her to help them. Their calls for help could be Wanda remembering the same cries she heard when Agatha had captured them at the end of episode 8. This could signal that Wanda is simply remembering some of her final moments with the twins, but they might also still be alive. Scarlet Witch's eyes glow brighter after hearing their voices and then WandaVision ends, leaving viewers to wonder about the twins' whereabouts.

Since Wanda created their lives before in the Hex, it is possible that her growing magical abilities will be used to bring Billy and Tommy to life for real. She's just starting to understand the power that comes with being the Scarlet Witch, but she's already warped reality in the past. Her inexperience appears to be why Billy and Tommy's lives were tied to Westview. After saying goodbye to them, Scarlet Witch might be searching the Darkhold for a way to create life in the real world to get her children back. Wanda could figure out - potentially with the help of Doctor Strange - a way to do this and bring her family back together.

There's also the possibility that Wanda's lack of understanding of the Hex didn't erase Billy and Tommy from the universe entirely. Instead, the twins could have been transported to another dimension without Scarlet Witch knowing it. Once she hears their cries for help, though, that would be all it takes for Wanda to begin searching for her kids. The exploration of other dimensions or universes could be what pushes her to seek out Doctor Strange.

One location from Marvel Comics where Scarlet Witch's twins could be located after WandaVision is the Dream Dimension. The Dream Dimension is one of the many alternate dimensions in the comics that is under Nightmare's control. It is a place where humanity's dreams manifest and take on a life of their own. Billy and Tommy aren't the traditional versions of dreams, but they were essentially a figment of Wanda's imagination that only existed inside a fake world. If she learns of the existence of the Dream Dimension and what it is capable of, this could be a place where Scarlet Witch can bring them back to life. Magicians and sorcerers can typically travel to the Dream Dimension with their astral forms, and WandaVision's post-credits scene already showed her mastering this ability.

This explanation for how Billy and Tommy can return makes even more sense considering the heavily rumored appearance of Nightmare in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Scarlet Witch is returning for a significant role in the sequel and the events of WandaVision setup what headspace she'll be in during the movie. Marvel's decision to have the show's last moments focus on her hearing Billy and Tommy likely isn't an accident. With the movie exploring the madness of the multiverse (something Wanda might have caused), Wanda's story in Doctor Strange 2 could see her on a mission to access the Dream Dimension so she can recreate Billy and Tommy. Of course, this is potentially why Nightmare or another villain would allow the twins' cries to be heard by Wanda, as they might need her help to pull off a master plan.

As prevalent as the rumors are that Nightmare will be Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness's villain, a more recent suggestion born from WandaVision is Chthon. The powerful being is an Elder God and Earth's first black magician in the comics. The reason Chthon is now near the top of most fans' predictions for Doctor Strange 2's villain is the result of the Darkhold. The evil sorcerer wrote the book in the comics and filled it with a collection of spells. He did this so that he'd gain more power as other magicians used his spells. Chthon hoped that he'd be able to open a doorway to his dimension once enough power had been collected. Chthon has a strong connection to Wanda too, as he gave her some of his essence when she was born so he could one day possess her body and use her incredible powers.

There haven't been any direct signs that Chthon already has a connection to Wanda in the MCU, but WandaVision did enough setup for a future link to be made. At the very least, Chthon's influence over Scarlet Witch could grow as she continues to study the Darkhold and use her Chaos Magic. This could be why Chthon teased Wanda with the sound of her children. If she draws more power and spells from the Darkhold, Chthon's hold on her and Earth can continue to grow. He can even offer her a chance to get the twins back in exchange for the power that can help him gain access to the MCU's universe. Since Wanda already sacrificed her kids once before to save others, it is unclear if this plan would be successful for Chthon, but that doesn't mean it still won't be attempted.

It is also possible that Mephisto could still have a role to play in Scarlet Witch's MCU story even after not appearing in WandaVision. When Wanda creates the twins originally in the comics, she unknowingly did so by using fragments of Mephisto's soul to bring them to life. Such a connection was not established in WandaVision and it is fair to question if Billy and Tommy even had souls to begin with. But, the MCU could still tie Mephisto to the answer of where the twins are at right now. Similar to the plans Nightmare or Chthon could concoct, Mephisto might have seen the disappearance of Westview as a chance to take their "souls" and use them for his own evil plans.

Mephisto taking the twins' souls would give Marvel Studios a chance to stay even closer to the source material, even though that isn't totally necessary at this stage. In reality, Mephisto could even have stolen their souls as part of a larger multiverse scheme that involves several powerful supernatural threats teaming up to take back Earth. Mephisto could be a pawn in a bigger plan orchestrated by Chthon, Dormammu, or another major villain. There'll be some clarity on this once Marvel reveals who the villain of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness really is, especially since they will likely have a role to play in bringing Billy and Tommy back to the MCU. For now, fans will be left to debate the possibilities after WandaVision left multiple interpretations open.
