The Falcon and the Winter Soldier's premiere had reduced gun violence because Marvel Studios wants their heroes to be interesting. Disney+'s latest MCU show debuted just a couple of weeks after WandaVision wrapped up, kicking off Sam and Bucky's six-episode adventure. Given the show's more grounded storytelling, the series' action set pieces will also be more realistic, but director Kari Skogland didn't want to just resort to using guns for their fight sequences.
Set after the events of Avengers: Endgame, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier sees Steve Rogers' closest friends move on from the events of the Infinity Saga after both disappearing and re-appearing five years later. The premiere episode, titled "New World Order," kept Sam and Bucky separated to establish their respective journeys in the show, but the introduction of new Captain America John Walker coupled with the rise of the Flag-Smashers will inevitably bring the pair together to tackle each villain. Despite not sharing the screen just yet, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier has already come up with some impressive action scenes, particularly Sam's opening mission; noticeably, however, there's not much use of guns throughout the episode.
Speaking with AV Club on the heels of the show's debut, Skogland, who helmed all six episodes of the show, reveals that it was an intentional creative decision to have reduced gun violence overall. She explains that the use of guns has been the default weaponry when heroes are backed into a corner and they want The Falcon and the Winter Soldier characters to be more interesting and innovative.
I guess one of the things that I did as a sort of overview was that we reduced weaponry. That does mean that all the things we choreographed come from sort of a different mindset, and that just by definition brings a different flavor to a scene.
For obvious reasons. I think that we need to look at weaponry in entertainment as being too much of a crutch. We wanted to have our characters be clever and interesting and not just rely on the go-to.
Both military men, it would make sense if Sam and Bucky used guns and, based on images and clips in future The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, they will be using them intermittently. What Skogland is pointing out is that they wanted more creative action set pieces that don't just rely on the use of guns — something that has been seen countless times in buddy action projects which The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is inspired by. If anything, this motivates them to find ways to stage their fight scenes better.
Expect The Falcon and the Winter Soldier to dial up the action in the coming episodes as Sam and Bucky finally come together. Aside from Walker and the Flag-Smashers, the show is also bringing back Baron Zemo from Captain America: Civil War, who is posed as another villain. How he fits in the story is unknown thus far but Bucky still has a score to settle with him considering that he was the one who framed him in the 2016 movie.
