10 Awesome Sci-Fi Video Games That Are Pretty Much Star Wars In All But Name

The Star Wars universe is inspired by many classic movies. It has in turn led to the creation of many other franchises which have been strongly influenced by the galaxy far far away. There are a lot of video games which could actually be an extension of the Star Wars world.

Whether it's the use of science fiction elements, the visual design, the types of characters or even the gameplay, there's plenty of video games out there that feel indebted to Star Wars in some way. While fans are eager to see what Lucasfilm Games has in store next in terms of their projects, there's lots of other experiences to check out first.

10 Honorable Mention: Red Dead Redemption

While not a science fiction game, when talking about the similarities between video games and the Star Wars franchise it's difficult to ignore the Western genre. Indeed, George Lucas was heavily inspired by the concept of the lone gunslinger and this game therefore has to be included in the conversation.

Tatooine alone feels like it has been plucked from a Western and The Mandalorian took the idea one step further. Out of all of the Western games, the Red Dead Redemption franchise is perhaps the definitive. Swap out the lead for a lone smuggler add some sci-fi props and a few ships and it's practically a Star Wars game.

9 Cyberpunk 2077

The Cyberpunk series is relatively new but there's already plenty of parallels being made between this take on the genre and the galaxy far far away. Of course, there are other connections to franchises such as that of Blade Runner.

But the influences from Star Wars are clear. This could be a game set on Coruscant thanks to the neon city, the multiple levels, the use of robotics in humans, and the types of political narratives playing out. Really this setting wouldn't feel out of place on the Republic Capital world.

8 The Outer Worlds

The Outer Worlds is a science fiction adventure that may not have gotten the best response when it first launched, but has now turned into a decent title that players are still enjoying. There's a number of similarities between the game and Star Wars.

Of course, the design of planets and the zany characters are great examples of this. But one thing about the Star Wars universe that set it apart when it first debuted was that the world felt lived in. The same can be said for The Outer Worlds which stylistically could fit into the animated side of the Star Wars franchise.

7 The Surge 2

The Surge 2 actually plays a little like Star Wars games of the past as the player battles through science-fiction creatures, with a single blade. With technological and organic beasts to slay, it's a little like traveling through the galaxy far far away.

From the environments to these creatures and the designs of the characters, it's actually the type of game that could arguably have inspired Fallen Order in some capacity. Indeed, a sequel could learn a lot from the Surge franchise in general.

6 Horizon Zero Dawn

Horizon Zero Dawn combines a number of elements that Star Wars fans would be familiar with. The lead heroine alone combines a number of tropes from the genre which would certainly match in well with the characters in the Disney franchise.

What's more, droid animals aside, the worlds in which these characters inhabit looks like they are one of the many planets in the Star Wars galaxy. If this story was happening out on the Outer Rim somewhere it wouldn't be all that surprising.

5 Warhammer 40k

The Warhammer 40k franchise feels like it could have been the Star Wars universe if history had played out slightly differently. The galactic factions, the never-ending wars, and of course the parallels between the Space Marines and the Stormtroopers are too many to mention.

There are many video games that put players directly in this world and many of them are a lot of fun. From first-person shooters to strategic and tactical PC experiences, the Games Workshop franchise is just as diverse as that of Lucasfilm's own IP.

4 Gears Of War

The Gears Of War franchise might be, all in, the closest video game series that there is to Star Wars. Perhaps it's the armor or the diverse range of alien species, but Gears has been compared to the galaxy far far away for many years.

Once again, if these games were actually set in a part of the galaxy that was yet to be explored on screen, it wouldn't be all that surprising. Future Lucasfilm games could actually learn a lot from the series though, which makes great use of some unique gameplay techniques to give the player more control in the story.

3 Spore

The Spore game is something slightly different and on the surface doesn't seem that related to Star Wars. The idea of the game is to create a new species of alien creature, which evolves, survives and ends up creating a civilization.

The types of creatures that can be created in the game though feel as if they have been found on some forgotten planet in the Star Wars galaxy. The colorful and creative designs could certainly inspire a whole range of creature designs in future Lucasfilm games.

2 Ghost Of Tsushima

Ghost Of Tsushima combines fantasy elements and while isn't a traditional science-fiction game is actually largely comparable to Star Wars because of this. Star Wars has been inspired largely by the Japanese Samurai productions for many years.

What's more, George Lucas doesn't even see the franchise as a sci-fi but instead a space opera, Western, Samurai, and fantasy series. Ghost Of Tsushima would only need some additional elements such as a lightsaber instead of a sword for instance, and would actually fit into Star Wars especially well.

1 Halo

Much like the Space Marines or the warriors of Gears Of War, there are lots of links that can be made between Halo and its soldiers and the galactic battles that take place in Star Wars. Once again, if some of the visual designs were slightly altered this could have been an alternate version of the Lucasfilm property.

The lore behind this popular shooter is also as deep as that of Star Wars. Each title brings something new to the table and from the location designs to the weaponry that's actually used in battle, there are lots of things that could crossover between the franchises.
