Bachelor: Colton Underwood’s Suicide Attempt Is Why He Came Out As Gay

Colton Underwood shocked The Bachelor fans this morning by announcing he is gay, but the reason for his announcement is even more shocking. Since his interview on Good Morning America, Colton has received an outpouring of support from his former Bachelor costars. Colton addressed the many things that led to him accepting his sexuality, but revealed he was suicidal at one point because of it. His feelings of self-loathing and shame were ultimately what led him to come out to the world.

Colton's relationship with Bachelor winner Cassie Randolph ended in early 2020. Their breakup got messy when Cassie filed a restraining order against him for allegedly putting a tracking device on her car. The two have since made peace with each other, but the incident left fans feeling like something was wrong in Colton's life. Since then, Colton erased all of his Instagram photos and still has yet to post. His life has been somewhat of a mystery since he broke up with Cassie, and we now know that he was in a dark place.

During his interview on Good Morning AmericaColton revealed his suicide attempt led him to accept his sexuality. He referred to it as "a wake-up call," saying that he realized he "would've rather died" than admit he was gay. "There was a moment in LA that I woke up and I didn't think I was gonna wake up. I didn't have the intentions of waking up," he told host Robin Roberts, "And I did." Colton attributed this moment and other suicidal thoughts to him realizing he needed to take back control of his life.

Colton explained he knew he was different from a young age, but didn't want to believe he was gay. Being raised in a Catholic family, he thought being gay was a sin. However, Colton has since changed his relationship with God, and made peace with his sexuality. He recently came out to his family and was met with a loving response. "I wish I would have had faith in my friends and my family a little bit more," he admitted, "The only reason I'm sitting down with [Good Morning America] today is because I have the love and the support of my friends and my family."

While Colton said he hasn't made an emotional connection with someone of the same sex before, he is looking forward to starting that chapter in his life. Now that he has the support of Bachelor Nation as well, there will be no shortage of guys who want to slide into his DMs. Maybe he could even take another turn on The Bachelorand do it the right way this time.
