Harry Lennix wants to return as Martian Manhunter and tell a story about his original occupation. Zack Snyder's Justice League finally revealed that General Calvin Swanwick from Man of Steel and Batman v Superman was Martian Manhunter, and the character made his true identity known to Bruce Wayne. This was setting up his place in future DCEU movies under Zack Snyder's tenure.
Martian Manhunter has been a major character in the pages of DC Comics and was a founding member of the original incarnation of the Justice League back in The Brave in the Bold #28. In the comics, he adopts the human alias John Jones and becomes a detective on Earth. While he is a founding member of the Justice League and has appeared in a number of adaptations, like Supergirl and Smallville, he is rarely given the lead in projects like fellow League members Aquaman, Flash, and Green Lantern.
During an interview for Justice Con, Lennix fans asked Lennix what type of story he would like to do if he got to play the role of Martian Manhunter again. Lennix expressed a desire to see them do a detective story like the character is in the comics. He wants to see him use his skills as a detective to avert a crisis as opposed to another superpowered brawl. Lennix said:
"It would be great to see him as a detective. There are some iterations where he is a detective. Even if he is still Calvin Swanwick by day. To actually have him do some detective type work where he can use his special skills. We can see that diplomacy can be a kind of superpower. When you are a member of a cabinet where maybe world-ending fights in the sky might not be the most effective or practical way to deal with it. He could use his skills as a detective and his intelligence to avoid or avert some kind of catastrophe"
Despite DC Comics getting its name from Detective Comics and one of the most iconic characters, Batman, having the nickname 'The World's Greatest Detective,' none of the major Warner Bros. films or television projects have leaned into the detective story angle. The Batman seems to be focusing more on Batman's detective roots, and the idea of a Martian Manhunter project taking a more grounded approach would be a way to distinguish him from Superman. Martian Manhunter could do a case in Gotham City and encounter characters like the Joker, which Lennix has expressed interest in.
The likelihood of seeing Lennix return to the role of Martian Manhunter so far seems slim, as Zack Snyder has said he is done with DC movies. Yet there is always still a chance the character could return in many types of projects. The character's status as a shapeshifter could allow him to pop up in a surprise cameo role in upcoming projects like Static Shock, Blue Beetle, and Hourman. The Flash will introduce the DC Multiverse and the character could get some closure on that front. The studio is also doing HBO Max movies and television series for smaller properties, so a detective story with Martian Manhunter might be the perfect project for them.
