MAFS: Experts Reveal How Long They Have To Fix 'Unmatchables'

Relationship experts Pastor Cal and Dr. Coles have seen it all while interviewing the thousands of candidates for every season of Married at First Sight. Audiences love to watch what happens with the couples who are selected to blindly say “I do.” But what happens to those candidates who aren’t selected for MAFS due to obvious personality quirks that make lasting relationships basically impossible? Viewers now get a chance to find out with Lifetime’s new spin-off show, Unmatchables. Screen Rant sat down with Pastor Cal and Dr. Coles to find out more.

Some of the people who have appeared on MAFS have seemed pretty unmatchable. There have been partners who are selfish, afraid to open up to their partner, unwilling to compromise, dishonest, disloyal, and immature. The worst case was Ryan De Nino, whose partner had to take out a restraining order against him. Of course, Chris Williams isn’t going to be voted husband-of-the-year anytime soon, either. But everyone on MAFS at least has the outward appearance of being a decent person who you’d like to spend more time with. The people on Unmatchables, on the other hand, have the kind of quirks that make you want to end your first date before the waiter can even take your orders.

Do you expect a man to buy you everything that catches your eye? Do you expect a woman to be your housekeeper? Do you like to eat while sitting on the toilet? These are the kind of quirks Pastor Cal and Dr. Coles are contending with on Unmatchables, and they only have a week to try and take these people from painfully quirky to genuinely dateable. The unmatchable contestants will be put to the test, with a blind date at the end of that week. Dr. Coles is excited about the challenge. “We don’t have time to mince words. There’s no beating around the bush because we have one week with these singles to really get them to a place where, by the end of their week with us, they go on a blind date and they can showcase for themselves…what they’ve learned.” She added, “We get to be very bold and radical in the way that we work with them, which is a dream come true for me!”

Pastor Cal thinks that with these smart, successful, but quirky unmatchables, viewers may see something familiar. “Some [viewers] are going to see themselves in a lot of these people. None of us are perfect…some of us are able to present [ourselves] better than others.” That can definitely be seen in some of the messier MAFS couples. Pastor Cal warns that this isn’t truly a one-week fix – this is a chance for people to recognize their issues and start addressing the root cause. “We can’t take away the challenges because we only have a week! But even though the quirks may be prominent, there’s a reason for them.” After a week with the experts, the unmatchables won’t be perfect, but they will have found the path that leads to healing.

With Married at First Sight, most of the work is done by the relationship experts before the cameras really start filming, keeping the process more mysterious. Unmatchables gives viewers a front-row seat to see how the experts help individuals improve themselves and get ready for a relationship, but under a tight time constraint. With only a week, the experts won’t be able to fix all of a person’s issues, but they’ll do what they can. Unmatchables premiers April 21 immediately after Married at First Sight.
